- 2. What is Compost? Compost starts with organic matter: dead parts of plants and sometimes, animals.
- 4. The organic matter decomposes (rots) when decomposing organisms grow on it. Decomposers include: ANIMALS BACTERIA FUNGI

- 8. When all of the decomposers are done, what is left is dark humus. The compost has many nutrients (things plants need to grow), and it can be used as fertilizer for plants.

- 10. How we compost at Mary Hooker School We start with leftover food, that we collect in the cafeteria. We also get plant waste from the greenhouse and vivarium
- 11. What organic (good materials) can you see? What non-organic (bad materials) can you see? There are 2 organics barrels in the cafeteria
- 12. Organic compost A problem we work on: getting the leftovers into: Trash, not compostable Liquid not compostable
- 14. The organic matter is then added to our composter.
- 16. The Earth Tub … is a big round steel tub. It can hold a truckload of compost. It has handles for turning, to mix and a motor that turns a mixing blade.

- 19. The Composter We also add sawdust. This step is important because the sawdust keeps the mixture dry, makes space for air, and adds carbon. PICTURE OF COMOST BEING ADDED

- 24. Afterwards, we turn the tub to mix the materials.
- 26. And, Oh yeah … Why? We want to save the earth and make it better We are an environmental science school, so we compost Also: We use compost to help grow better plants and flowers.

- AUSTIN: HERE ARE SOME EXAMPLES OF ORGANIC MATERIALS. IN THIS PICTURE YOU CAN SEE PAPAYA, LETTUCE, AND BANANA. This MAY LOOK LIKE ROTTEN FOOD, BUT REALLY IT IS A WHOLE OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE.

- MONICA: THESE EARTHWORMS ARE ANIMALS THAT HELP DECOMPOSE THE ORGANIC MATERIALS. Ants and roly poly bugs are other animals that decompose.
- DIANDRA: FUNGUS (AND MOLD) GROWS ALL OVER THE FOOD. IT CAN BE WHITE, GRAY,OR BLACK. IT LOOKS FUZZY.Fungi put roots into the organic matter. The roots release chemicals that break down the organic matter.
- AUSTIN: Bacteria are microscopic organisms that also break down the organic material. WHEN FRUIT ROTS, AND TURNS BROWN OR BLACK, THEN THE BACTERIA ARE GROWING.

- Micah: Here are the 2 composters that we have.
- Micah:The motor is what powers the mixing blade. The door for adding waste is what we pull up so that we can put the compost inside. And the turning handle is used to turn the tub around so that the mixing blade will contact all of the compost.
