Custom Foot Orthotics
Article by: Dr. Keith Concisom
What are orthotics?
Orthotics are prescribed insoles that fit inside your footwear and are made to treat or adjust various
biomechanical disorders of the feet and body. Your foot will be casted using biofoam to obtain a true
mould of your foot. The mould will then by sent to our lab to be fabricated using sophisticated milling
and computer programs to make specific adjustments to the polymer shell of the orthotic.
Do I need orthotics?
During standing and walking our bodies are subjected to the natural forces that can inflicit mechanical
stress and strain throughout our joints when foot imbalance is present there is negative impact in the
knees, hips, back and neck this imbalance must be removed for to achieve improved postural alignment
and proper foot function.
Orthotics correct this imbalance improving the biomechanics of the body leading to relief of pains in the
feet and throughout the body the fascia contributes support to the arches of the bottom of each foot.
Assessment
It is very important to have a comprehensive gait analysis and biomechanical assessment to determine the
proper corrections needed in your custom orthotics. It should consist of a patient history, a Patients
medical history, physical and biomechanical examination of the back, lower limbs and feet.
Proper Footwear
Custom orthotics work well when they are paired with a properly fitted shoe, ensuring that you have the
proper type of shoe is important allowing the orthotic to correct any foot imbalances. The type of foot
wear is important as well. Depending on your activity level and work conditions, proper footwear
recommendations can be made to support your feet.
