Aristotle Glyky is running for the position of Mediation representative for UBLC. As a 2nd year law student, he participated in the prestigious International Commercial Mediation Competition last year with no prior experience and made it to the finals. Glyky emphasizes that the position will provide students valuable experience in mediation and alternative dispute resolution to avoid expensive litigation. “It is only fair to emphasise that the opening of such a position, to assist for the successful
participation of our University in the International Commercial Mediation Competition (ICMC),
is a huge step as a means of providing students with the opportunity to receive a tangible
experience of what the emerging area of mediation involves. Mediation, being a part of ADR
(alternative dispute resolution), is commended to assist in the successful resolution of a dispute
and negotiate a settlement that directly involves the interests of the parties so as to avoid going
to expensive litigation and bear any detrimental side effects.
The ICMC organised by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), is one of the most
prestigious mediation moots around the world and therefore participation ensures an
invaluable experience in commercial Mediation for everyone, regardless of any prior experience
in either ADR or commercial law. And that is not a mere statement. It is a personal guarantee.
Last year, beinga 1st year law student –and besides not possessing any prior experience in either
ADR or commercial law - the whole idea of Mediation attracted my attention and since most
lawyers love edging challenges I applied for participation. With no prior experience and with
‘smart’ 2nd and 3rd years involved, it really seemed a daunting challenge for me. However, not
only have I made it through the first round but I also reached the finals.

since I have had an exclusively thorough experience in both the organisation of the internal
mediation competition and the actual preparation and assistance that each candidate requires
throughout for anoverall successful venture”.
