Construction is one of the fastest growing sectors and over the next 10 years
there will be over 1,500 construction jobs created in Manchester.
Some of the types of jobs are listed below.

5. Case Study: Natasha – Higher apprenticeship as
a construction site manager
Natasha works for Kier Construction on a trainee site manager
apprenticeship. She began her apprenticeship at 20, after attending an open
day at Trafford College.
Natasha is also studying for a degree in project management which is
sponsored by her employer. The apprenticeship and the degree course are
developing Natasha's management, organisation and planning skills, and
after she graduates she hopes to move on to managing her own construction
site.
“My apprenticeship has allowed me to practise and develop, to learn on the
job and to take on more responsibility as I progress. I love that no two days
are the same – it’s a busy job, but it is very rewarding! I would advise people
to take their time deciding what they want to do, and look for something that
they finding interesting”

There are many opportunities to explore within the construction industry with a
range of different jobs being available some of these include manual jobs like
plumbers, bricklayers and joiners but it also includes specialist jobs which
include designers, architects and project managers.
With major development taking place across Manchester companies like Laing
O Rourke, BAM Construction and a range of many smaller construction
companies are growing their workforce.

Greater Manchester has the UK's largest creative and digital
economy outside London.
The Digital sector is the fastest growing industry in Manchester and
accounts for 62,000 jobs in Greater Manchester.
Around 300 new creative and digital companies are started every
year in the City.

12. Case Study: Tom – Social Media Apprentice
Tom is taking an Advanced Apprenticeship in Social Media and
Digital Marketing and works for Bamboo in Manchester
Tom is responsible for the company’s social media activity and he is
involved in creating web content, blogs and e-letters, and e-
marketing for clients
“I definitely feel I made the right choice and I would recommend
Apprenticeships to anyone interested in a career in Social Media
and Digital Marketing.”

Which languages are the most in demand according to employers?
French? Spanish? Mandarin? It’s actually Java, SQL and PHP.
Programming is the future.
The digital industry needs 750,000 new workers with digital skills by
2017. The opportunities are endless in the UK’s fastest growing

18. Case Study: Aesha – Business Administration
Apprentice
Aesha is taking an Intermediate level apprenticeship in Business
Administration with an international financial services company with
offices in Manchester.
As part of her role Aesha helps to put together financial information
about her team’s performance for senior managers. The experience
she has gained on the team will soon allow her to apply for a higher
grade role.
“Embarking on my apprenticeship has given me the opportunity to
get my career started. The things I’ve learned and the people I’ve
met mean I now have the opportunity to progress further.”

There are a huge range of careers in the industry, and while many
require you to be good with numbers, there’s a whole range of jobs
for people with soft and transferable skills.

regardless of background and can offer potential lucrative rewards.
