Determinism
Possibilism
Possibilism is a concept that is most
commonly associated with the work
of the French geographer Vidal de
la Blache
Possibilism
Greek Period
Aristotle
Nature of Hot and soft Area
The people living in Hot areas are intelligent, but
they are
People have a different and difficult time living where:
(1)-Climate is too cold
(2)- Climate is too hot
(3)- When there is no water
Human Settlements
- People don’t want to live on poles or in the
deserts Where harsh climate prevails
Housing Material
People tend to make their house out of
available material. What would you make
your house out of, if you lived in?
A desert or arid region
An area with lot of snow
A jungle
Corresponding material for above cited areas wo
be:
i)A house made of dirt or mud
ii)A traditional igloo in polar Regions
iii)A house made on top of a tree
Above example show the power or
influence of nature on man. Which
forces men to live their lives with
specific limitation imposed by the
environment.
Agricultural Activities
The environment has a huge impact on all
types of food that humans can grow. How did
they grow if and where can they grow it?
Agricultural activity can be affected by:
i)Topography
ii)Climate
Transpiration Patterns
The environment, especially topography and climate,
can have an impact on transportation patterns.
1)Mountains are barriers to trade because it is difficult
to build roads across the mountains
2)People use rivers and the ocean for transportation
routes because boats transport goods more efficiently.
Extreme weather, such as cold, can make it difficult to
transport the goods.
Decline Of Environmental Determinism
Environmentalism was criticized for two reasons:
 First
First reason is that similar physical Environments do not produce
the same response, as Mediterranean civilization of Greece and
Rome did not develop in similar climatic conditions in Australia,
South Africa or California.
 Second
Secondly, although environment influences man yet man also
influences the environment.
Overpopulation
1- Control Death rate
2-Birth rate
3- Control the disease
1- Industry
2-vehical
3-waste of water
Humanity is continuously polluting indispensable
resources like air, water, and soil which requires millions of
years to replenish.
Air is arguably the most polluted with the US
producing 147 million metric tons of air
pollution each year alone.
Pollution
Global warming is arguably the greatest
cause of impact to the environment
The largest of causes emanating through CO₂
levels from respiration to more detrimental
causes like burning fossil fuels and
deforestation.
At any rate, humans are consistently
increasing CO₂ levels globally- every year.
Climate Change
Climate change is closely connected to
historical development of industry and technology. As
global temperatures increase, Earth's weather patterns
will drastically change.
Genetic Modification
Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have
been a major contributor to the survival and
prosperity of humans
GMO's are selected bred crops or crops that have had DNA
directly implanted into it in order to give an advantage to the
crop, whether that be to sustain colder temperatures, require less
water, or yield more product.
Ocean Acidification
Ocean acidification is caused when CO₂
dissolves into the ocean bonding with sea
water creating carbonic acid.
Ocean acidity by 30% in the last 200 years according to analysis
The acid reduces the pH
Deforestation
With an exponential expansion in human beings,
more food, materials, and shelter are being
manufactured at stupendous rates, mostly stemming
from forestry.
According to international data, an estimated 18 million acres of
trees are clear-cut each year to make way for new development
and wood products- that is just under half of all the trees on the
planet since the industrial revolution began.
Acid Rain
When humans burn coal, sulphur dioxide and nitrogen
oxides are released into the atmosphere where they rise up and
accumulate in the clouds until the clouds become saturated and
rain acid, causing havoc on the ground beneath
Trees that absorb the acid
accumulate toxins that damage
leaves and slowly kills large areas of
forest.
Ozone Depletion
The ozone layer is renowned for its ability to absorb harmful UV rays
that would otherwise be detrimental to the health of all walks of life.
Without an ozone layer, walking outside would be unbearable.
Ozone is made up of three bonded oxygen's that float up to the
stratosphere where they absorb a substantial amount of UV
radiation, protecting all life down below. However "ozone-depleting
substances" (or ODS) primarily made up of chlorine and bromine
find their way up to the stratosphere where they strip the O3 of an
oxygen, destroying its capabilities of absorbing UV light.
