The Social Impacts of Malcolm X The Black Civil Rights Movement of the 20th century pushed for
and achieved different levels equality through its many prominent activists. Prior to the movement,
millions of Black Americans faced brutal abuse and segregation with little to no government action
taking place against such wrongdoings. The movement included passionate advocates for black
equality such as Rosa Parks, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. These civil and human
rights activists inspired millions of Americans to join in the cause for justice and equality for all
through their many unique styles. Malcolm X was one prominent civil rights activist known for his

Eventually, Malcolm Little was caught and sentenced to prison for 10 years on robbery charges in
1946. While in prison, he heard about the African American religious group known as the Nation of
Islam. The Nation of Islam was a controversial organization founded by Wallace Fard Muhammad.
The organization was classified as a cult by many Americans and was known for its extremist
philosophies. The main reason it attracted Malcolm Little though was because it was a large,
powerful black organization. Malcolm Little was interested and decided to start making contact with
the organization through letters. He eventually contacted the group's leader Elijah Muhammad.
Elijah wrote to Malcolm Little saying that blacks should not be ashamed of their skin color and that
blacks were not inferior to whites; whites were the ones who put blacks down. For the first time in
his life, Malcolm Little began to feel he could be a part of something. He thought he could actually
be accepted and become a Muslim. While Malcolm Little was raised a Baptist, he never paid much
attention in church and did not understand how singing and praying would make anything better.
Now that Malcolm Little had been introduced to a religion and organization that pertained more to
him, he was eager. When Malcolm Little was finally let out on parole after 8 years, he instantly
became a member of the Nation of Islam and cleansed his

Nation Of Islam In The Light Of Elijah Muhammad
Nation of Islam in the Light of Elijah Muhammad
In 1961 James Baldwin met Elijah Muhammad, the leader of the Nation of Islam movement at the
time. Baldwin's experience within the Christian Church prior to his meeting with Elijah helped him
analyze the Nation of Islam. This also allowed him to draw parallels between the Nation of Islam
movement and the Christian Church. How James Baldwin understood the way the Christian Church
worked, and a close look at the Nation of Islam, brings to light the credibility of organized religions.
In 1930 Wallace D. Fard gave birth to the Nation of Islam movement. He began in Detroit going
door to door preaching to black families about his remedy for their problems. He ... Show more

As for the other accounts, the lynching event did not even surface. Elijah then moved to Detroit
where he met Wallace D. Fard and developed into an adamant supporter of Fard and the Nation of
Islam. Elijah viewed Fard as a divine being and after Fard's disappearance, Elijah set up a second
temple to the Nation of Islam in Chicago (Dodoo 1+). When James Baldwin met Elijah Muhammad
and wrote "Down at the Cross", Elijah controlled the context of the Nation of Islam doctrine.
The Nation of Islam believed and followed certain ideas during the reign of Elijah Muhammad.
They pushed toward black separation from the "white" United States. James Baldwin and both
articles written by Peter Kihss noted that they wanted the United States to hand over four or five
southern states as reparations from slavery. The movement's beliefs on creation stated African
Americans existed seventy–eight trillion years ago, when a black God created himself from a single
atom, which formed itself from nothing. Elijah claimed, a council of twenty–four black deities ruled
over the universe for the past sixty–six trillion years. Twenty–three existed as Scientists and the
twenty–fourth as God or Allah over the others, who was created here on earth. These Scientists
determined the history of the word in advance, and every twenty–five thousand years, each God that
came after the other God made a new civilization. His

Malcolm X Ideology
Malcolm X a Black Nationalist leader was born on May 19, 1925 in Omaha, Nebraska served as a
spokesmen for the Nation of Islam during the 1950s and 1960s.It is said by historians that he was
the one of the reasons that the nation of Islam went form 400 members to 40,000 members from
1952 to 1960's and continued to grow well into the 1980s and into the 21st century. This was due to
the fact that he gave very articulate and passionate speeches that would lead to bigger and bigger
audiences. He told blacks to end racism "by any means necessary" which included violence.
Malcolm X little grew up with a life of violence, growing up in rural white Nebraska Malcom X
was the middle child of 8 having a mother who was a homemaker and a father who was a preacher.
Because of his family being black he and his family were often harassed by white supremacist
groups such as the Ku Klux Klan and the black legion. After an attack on the little household by the
Ku Klux Klan that resulted in the all the houses windows smashed. Which caused the family to
move to East Lansing, Michigan which was worse than Nebraska and ended with his father dead
after 2 years of moving in 1931 with his death being ruled a suicide. Malcom's mother never
accepted his death and was sent to a mental institution in 1937 and left Malcom X with family of

How Did Malcolm X Become A Hustler
Malcolm X grew up in the Midwest during the 1930's. His family moved to Michigan where is
father was murdered sending his mother into a mental breakdown. When he finished his eighth
grade at a foster home he moved to Boston with his half–sister Ella. At this point Malcolm became
engulfed into the night life. He gets a job as a railway porter and moves to New York. It is there that
he becomes a hustler and involves himself in illegal activities by Sammy and Shorty. When things
get to dangerous in Harlem he moves back to Boston where he is arrested for burglary. Prison
provided a new outlook on life for Malcolm as he became interested in Islam promoted by the

Malcolm X : A Man Not Many People Truly Know About
A righteous and amazing individual known as Malcolm X was a man not many people truly know
about. Malcolm's enthusiasm in helping blacks really understand the world they live in and their
credence in their society should at the least be welcomed so a correlation can be established and the
world can focus on more pressing issues other than race. He was an angry, potent activist and
motivated extremist for all the right reasons. In his life he had to overcome many obstacles and
triumph over many predicaments that threatened him mentally and physically. Malcolm had
converted to a religion and he gave it his all. Malcolm believed in the religion and its leader more
than he believed in himself, just to find out things are never what they seem. People time after time
tried to end his life even before he was assassinated and though he realized that his days were
numbered still pushed forward. One thing we all learn in life is that your biggest enemy that you
will ever face is yourself; at times he fought himself more than anyone else.
In Malcolm's younger years he was quite a different type of person. At the time he was a drug dealer
and though he sold drug he used them himself. He was doing petty robberies in other cities, but he
was imprisoned for committing another crime. While in jail he went from being an young atheist
drug dealer and addict to a proud member of the Nation of Islam. It was his brother Reginald that
occasionally visited him. Each time he would tell Malcolm

Malcolm X The Ballot Or The Bullet
Malcolm X, a Black Nationalist, Muslim minister and a human rights activist, was executed by men
from the Black Muslim Movement cult that he had recently left for good. An analysis of Malcolm
X's earlier debate with Bayard Rustin (1962) in comparison to his later speech "The Ballot or the
Bullet" (1964) acknowledges his idol worship of Elijah Muhammad in the Black Muslim Movement
and documents his transformation into an enlightened and open–minded Civil Rights Leader before
his tragic assassination. The speeches allow us to follow stages of Malcolm 's life. Malcolm's early
speeches reflect the time spent in the Nation of Islam and mirrors his devotion and allegiance to the
Honorable Elijah Muhammad. We witness a transformation of personal growth and enlightenment
from 1962 to 1964. His later speeches, preceding his involvement with the Black Muslim
Movement and Elijah Muhammad, establish his own message to his people which was Pan–
Africanism. Pan–Africanism, encourages unity among people of African descent all over the world.
Malcolm believed Black people should be economically independent of the White America.
To understand the radical views that Malcolm held you would have to know his origin. Malcolm X
was born Malcolm Little in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1925 one of eight children. His father, Earl Little,
was a preacher who was also a member of the Universal Negro Improvement Association founded

Malcolm X, originally known as Malcolm Little, was born on May 19th 1925 in Omaha, Nebraska.
Malcolm's father, Earl Little, instilled the significance of independence and the idea of black pride
because of his membership in the Universal Negro Improvement Association and support towards
the black nationalist Marcus Garvey. Malcolm X was then sent into foster care at an early age due to
his father's passing and mother's enrollment in a mental hospital in 1937. Malcolm's family often
moved place to place (Omaha, Nebraska to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Lansing, Michigan) because
of the frequent encounters and death threats with and from white supremacists. He began to

1946 – 1952 Prison Time
Malcolm was arrested and sentenced ten years in jail as he was charged for larceny (theft of
personal property). In this time he decided he would get an education. Malcolm was constantly
reading books for the jail library, trying to make up for the years he missed after dropping out of
High School. He was visited by siblings that told him stories of joining the Nation of Islam and just
before Malcolm was released he joined his siblings in this group. Malcolm also decided to neglect
his last name 'little', due to being considered a relic of slavery and adopted 'X' as his new surname.

Nation of Islam in the Light of Elijah Muhammad
In 1961 James Baldwin met Elijah Muhammad, the leader of the Nation of Islam movement at the
time. The time Baldwin spent within the Christian Church prior to his meeting with Elijah helped
him analyze what the Nation of Islam did for people. It allowed him to notice that everyone needed
a gimmick to keep them out of the ghetto, "and it does not matter what the gimmick is" (Baldwin
301). Baldwin realized that the Christian Church was his gimmick, so the Nation of Islam would
never do for him what the Christian Church had already done. Plus, some of the beliefs of the
Nation of Islam were a little far fetched. The Nation of Islam did not function as a very credible
religion during its ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He had three main ideas he preached that helped him with sales. He wanted black separatism,
everyone to know that white men were evil (which was not hard for African Americans to believe
since the idea already lived within their minds), and to show the inadequacy of Christianity to
African Americans. By preaching these ideas, he eventually had a following of loyal supporters of
his made up religion, who of course paid money to the church. When Fard was arrested in 1933, he
"admitted that his teachings were strictly a racket and he was getting all the money out of it he
could" (United States 1+). What he preached aided him in his peddling. He did not take his
teachings seriously yet he met a man one day that viewed him as God incarnate. One night Elijah
Poole attended one of Fard's sermons and spoke with him afterwards. He told him that "you're God
himself" (Marsh 39). At the time, the movement had eight thousand followers (Marsh 39). At this
point, Fard needed to find adamant believers who would serve as ministers for his money making
organization. At this time he recruited Elijah Poole, changed Elijah's name to Elijah Muhammad and
developed him into his Chief Minister. Soon after, Fard left Detroit and Elijah took over the
movement. Elijah was born in Sandersville, Georgia, in 1897 as the seventh of twelve children. He
barely finished the third grade before he dropped out

Qualities Of Malcolm X
Malcolm X is a historical figure that is remembered by all. His efforts love on without him as
America attempts to follow his main principle and "live together in justice and love" (Shabazz xvii).
Malcolm X was an honest and fair man that developed his persona by accepting his faults, voicing
his opinions, and treating everyone equally. His qualities were expressed in his autobiography as he
developed from a misguided teenager to a freedom fighter. Malcolm was recognized for accepting
his faults to others. Even his daughter, Atallah Shabazz, recollects about his bluntness. In the text it
states, "Hustling, numbers running, stealing... Indeed these accounts were factual and he was always
the first to tell them" (Haley & Shabazz xv). This quote recalls all of Malcolm's misguided, illegal
actions as a teenager. Not only does it show perseverance in change, but, it glorifies his honesty as
Malcolm is the first one that owns up to his mistakes. Another example of his honesty is mentioned
when he starts his rendezvous with "Sophia". In the text it states, "One of the shames that I have
carried for years is that I blame myself for all of this. To have treated her as I did for a white
woman, made the doubly heavy" (Haley & Shabazz 72). In this passage, Malcolm hurts the feelings
of a genuine girl that he, himself has feelings for to go after a white woman that would boost his
ego. Malcolm reminisces his regret for ruining Laura's life and understands his idiotic mistake of

Sociological Concepts In The Film Malcolm X, By Spike Lee
Malcolm X, a 1992 movie inspired by the autobiography of the same name, follows the life of
polarizing, yet nonetheless revolutionary historical figure, Malcolm X. Director of the film, Spike
Lee, follows Malcolm's tragic childhood, more than mischievous teenage years, and the
transformation that occurs in his adulthood. The film displays multiple sociological concepts, all of
which contribute to the manifestation of Malcolm's ideology. Throughout the movie, Spike Lee
delves into the concepts of race, gender, ethnocentrism, and religion, all of which are seen through
the eyes of the film's main character. Born in Nebraska in 1925, Malcolm's early childhood
consisted of inequality and confusion, both of which had manifested from a racist system. ... Show

Malcolm was often perceived as a 'radical' or a 'black supremacist,' when in reality he advocated for
better treatment of black people, as well as the realization that ethnocentric values had been
suppressing other cultures. His religious values forwarded his life's work, and also influenced his
views on gender roles. The movie attempts to explain many standards set by a society that cared
little for actual equality, and one that is vital to understand in order to sympathize with current

The Nation of Islam
On October 7, 1897 in Sandersville, Georgia, a woman named Marie Poole gave birth to a boy who
she named Elijah. Elijah's parents were sharecroppers, and this father was a Baptist minister (Black
Supremacists, 25). After an eighth grade education, in 1931, Elijah Poole moved to Detroit where,
he says, he met "Allah in person". This was a man named Fard Muhammad–"The first and only man
born in Mecca who came to America for the express purpose of teaching the so–called Negro" (Mr.
Muhammad Speaks, 103). Elijah studied under Fard Muhammad, after which, he acquired a new
title and sense of purpose. Since then, Elijah referred to himself as "Elijah Muhammad, the

During the meal, Elijah Muhammad asked James Baldwin to join his cause and become a member
of the Nation of Islam. Baldwin indirectly hinted that he didn't want to become a member of the
Nation of Islam. Baldwin said that he "left the church twenty years ago and [he hasn't] joined
anything since" (Baldwin, 327). He told Muhammad that he was a writer and that he likes "doing
things alone" (Baldwin, 327). The decision to not join the Nation of Islam is one of the main foci of
"Down at the Cross". And while the reasons he vocalized to Muhammad aren't bad, it goes without
saying that nobody would decline membership to such a powerful organization, offered by the
leader himself, just because they "like doings things alone". Elijah Muhammad was insane. His
teachings were evil and racist. And having a thorough knowledge of what exactly the Nation of
Islam was helps explain why James Baldwin truly made the decision he made.
After his encounter with Fard Muhammad, Elijah Muhammad founded his first temple in Detroit,
and then moved to Chicago where he set up the headquarters for the Nation of Islam. He was
arrested for lecturing against negroes fighting "the white man's war", and although he was absolved
of sedition, he was later found guilty of draft dodging and served three years in the Federal
Correction Institution at Milan, Michigan in 1943 (Mr. Muhammad Speaks, 103). After being
released, he continued building the Nation of Islam.

Malcolm X Impact on the World Essay
The history of the world has had its encounters with separation and segregation when it comes to
race. For a long time the world has seen racism as a large problem and this has caused ethnic groups
to be looked down upon or forced into a lifestyle of difficulties and suppression. Due to this
situation, races, in particularly African Americans, have been forced to deal with unequal
opportunity and poverty, leading to less honorable ways of getting by and also organizations and
support change. Malcolm X is an example of an African American man who fell into this type of
hate and acted against it. Malcolm X united people to promote the advancement of African
Americans and change when it comes to his own race.

Malcom X And The Civil Rights Of Malcolm X
By definition, civil rights are the rights of citizens to political and social equality. To simplify that,
civil rights are rights that every person should have, no matter what race, color, ethnicity, etc. Some
people believed so strongly that everyone should have civil rights, they were willing to risk their
own lives for it. People such as Martin Luther King Jr, Rosa Parks, Ruby Bridges, Elizabeth
Eckford, Ernest Green, Hazel Massery, and many others. One of the many civil rights activists was
Malcolm Little, who later changed his name to Malcolm X. Malcolm X was one of the activists who
fought back violently. All of these civil rights activists wanted generally the same thing. "Dr. King
wants the same thing I want. Freedom" ––Malcolm X. Many of them used words, and peaceful
protests, many of which were led by Martin Luther King Jr. Malcolm X strongly believed that peace
would never solve anything, so he decided to use violence to get his way.

In 1925 Malcolm Little was born in Omaha, Nebraska. His father was a Baptist preacher that spread
Marcus Garvey's ideas of black nationalists. His father got many threats from the KKK that
influenced his family to move to Lansing, Michigan. These threats continued after they moved, but
they did not stop Malcolm's father from preaching. Members of the Black Legion brutally beat and
killed Malcolm's father in 1931. The police of the town never prosecuted the men held guilty for this
crime. Malcolm was taken away from his family in 1937 by welfare caseworkers. He later dropped

Once he was out Malcolm became a minister for the Nation of Islam in New York. Unlike MLK,
Malcolm supported liberation and self–defense for African Americans. Malcolm was greatly
admired by African Americans all across the country.
Malcolm began to become more outspoken than Muhammad during the early 1960s. Muhammad
did not support the Civil Rights Movement well enough to be followed as closely anymore. In 1963,
Malcolm suggested that JFK's assassination was not a problem, in fact, he saw it as a way of the
whites losing power like they were supposed to. By Malcolm coming out and saying this, Elijah
Muhammad was given the chance to suspend Malcolm from the Nation of Islam. Muhammad had
been looking for a reason to suspend Malcolm because Muhammad saw him as a threat. Malcolm
had become too powerful for Muhammad's liking.
Malcolm left the organization formally a few months later. He went on a journey to Mecca and was
greatly affected by the lack of racial discrimination amongst the Orthodox Muslims. When he
returned to America, he returned as El–Hajj Malik El–Shabazz. He started an organization the
pushed for black identity and stated that racism, in general, was everyone's enemy. This was the

Not to mention, Malcolm X was very charismatic and the one to get his point across. Malcolm
always made himself clear in his speeches regardless if it was offensive or not. He strived to be
revolutionary, fight to win equality for all oppressed minorities. Malcolm X rose quickly in the NOI,
becoming the minister of NOI's Temple Seven in Harlem in June of 1954. Malcolm X
simultaneously was becoming an accomplished journalist; he wrote for several publications before
he founded the NOI's newspaper, Muhammad Speaks. Malcolm X's new found fame also attracted
the attention of the FBI, which soon began tapping his phone, concerned that some kind of racially

Leaders of Nations
The Nation of Islam impacted many African American people during its time. This Black Muslim
nation demanded adherence to basic teachings, which included racial separation, white devilry, and
the coming Armageddon. None of these basic teachings supported James Baldwin's perceptions,
which pitied whites for their inability to see through the color curtain and embrace differences that
whites and blacks held together to create a better, inexorable, and supreme nation. Leaders such as
Elijah Muhammad and Malcolm X provided the vision of the Nation of Islam. These moguls proved

From his speeches on the radio and in newspapers, many people also thought of Muhammad as a
fierce man, among these people was Baldwin. On first meeting Muhammad, Baldwin shows his
surprise by saying "I [had] associated him with ferocity. But, no – the man who came into the room
was small and slender, really very delicately put together, with a thin face, large, warm eyes, and a
most winning smile" (Baldwin 323). Muhammad was a regular man that merely exuded confidence
and carried himself with pride. He had a powerful air around him, because he meant every single
word that escaped his mouth. As superior of the Islam movement, Muhammad helped integrate the
movement's demand within as many black communities as he could. He started out with
implementing a grocery store in a nearby black community with nothing but Muslim employees.
Then slowly a restaurant and a bakery came to pass. Muhammad was well on his way to proving to
blacks that they could accomplish their own needs without having "to demand [anything of] the
white devil or resort to him" (Clegg 50). According to a New York Times article written by Peter
Kihss, the movements demand was simply "[s]eparation, not integration... land of our own" ("Negro
Extremist" 1). The black nation of Islam wanted four or five states to be turned over as payment for
300 years of slave labor. This way blacks could more establish themselves as

All of them urged Malcolm to write to Mr. Elijah Muhammad. Although he did write he felt
embarrassed because he had poor grammar and could not articulate his thoughts efficiently.
Malcolm had emerged himself in the teachings of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad and began to try
to "teach" others what he was still learning.
"I soon began writing to people I had known in the hustling world, such as Sammy the Pimp, John
Hughes, the gambling house owner, the thief Jumpsteady, and several dope peddlers" (Autobio
p.173).
After an incident where his brother was suspended from the Nation for immoral behavior Malcolm
had begun to doubt the teachings of the Nation of Islam. To Malcolm they're had to be some
misunderstanding because his brother introduced the nation to him. That night Malcolm had a vision
of a man and that morning he had received a letter from Mr. Muhammad telling him if he didn't
believe now he had never believed that statement alone renewed his faith in the Nation and he
rejected his brother.
Malcolm was released on parole and he made his way to Detroit where he began working at a
furniture store and became a member of the Temple. Malcolm became restless with the recruiting
efforts of the Temple and upon his first meeting with Mr. Muhammad Malcolm voiced his opinions
about recruiting and he agreed appointing him minister of the Temple of Detroit.

Coming From An Awareness Of Language By Malcolm X
In Malcolm X 's biography "Coming to an Awareness of Language" he reveals that he struggled
with expressing himself in his writing due to lack of education. He grew up speaking only slang and
even though he was well respected for being one of the best speakers in the streets, it didn 't get him
very far when he needed to be seen in the eyes of professionals. While incarcerated inNorfolk Prison
Colony, Malcolm X wrote to various people about a variety of issues that he deemed important.
However none of those letters were responded to,and his desire to be taken seriously led him to
expand his education. X's essay was effective to show people that language is a weapon; it 's only as
powerful as the person behind it. In this excerpt X realizes that the knowledge of language has an
effect on how people perceive you. X recalls about how in the streets, he was the most articulate
hustler out there. "I commanded attention when I said something." (X, 69).However while being in
prison, he realized his street slang was not getting him the attention he thought he deserved – or any
attention at all. His language limited him from being able to express his passion for the issues that
he wrote about. While incarcerated Malcolm 's brother would visit him and talk to X about his recent
conversion to the Muslim religion. Intrigued by the culture, Malcolm started to study the teachings
of Elijah Muhammad. At first, X wrote letters to a variety of individuals such as Sammy the Pimp,

The Autobiography Of Malcolm X As Told By Alex Haley
The Autobiography of Malcolm X as told by Alex Haley is the story about a man who greatly
impacted American history. Malcolm Little, or Malcolm X as he is more widely known, taught what
he believed in regards to segregation, racism, and discrimination. Growing up in a large family with
a father Earl Little, a Baptist minister, and his mother Louis Little, who was a homemaker,
Malcolm's life at the time seemed very promising. His father's involvement in support of the Black
National gained him many death threats at the hands of white supremacists. In 1929, they lost their
house to fire, and two years later the body of Malcolm's father was found mutilated. This lead to the
emotional breakdown of Malcolm's mother and in turn she was institutionalized. Malcolm and his
siblings were separated and placed in foster homes, and from then, his life began a path of drugs,
sex, and crime. It was not until he was imprisoned in 1946, that he decided to make some changes
for the better. This essay will assess and discuss those changes whether negative or positive, on a
micro, mezzo, and macro level. It will also cover some of the effects of racial prejudice on human
behavior, and how society today keeps the ideology of Malcolm X alive. Malcolm X on the micro
level involves interactions with many individuals throughout his life. From his parents and siblings
to girlfriends and his wife, and even those he met in prison and after prison, they all played
significant roles in Malcolm's

"If you are not willing to pay the price for freedom, you don't deserve freedom." –– Malcolm X
Malcolm Little ( known as Malcolm X) was born on May 19, 1925, in Omaha, Nebraska. Malcolm
Little was the fourth born child out of eight children. Malcolm's mother's name was Louise Little
who worked as a homemaker. Louise was a wife to Earl Little (Malcolm Little's father) who was an
active preacher and a proud supporter of a black nationalist named Marcus Gravy. Earl Little was so
intrigued by Marcus Gravy's work, power, and stance, that Earl himself became a member of the
Universal Negro Improvement Association. Because of Earl's frequent and lively activism and
involvement with the liberation of african americans in America, his family was often exposed to
harsh prejudices and racisms – even to the extent of the Little family being exposed to harassments,
threats, and targets from the Klu Klux Klan on several occasions. When the Klu Klux Klan had
vandalized the families household on different days, Earl Little had decided to take the "flight"
option on several different occasions. Earl and his family had moved from their households in;
Omaha, Milwaukee, and Wisconsin, until they finally settled down in a quiet area in East Lansing,
Michigan in 1929. The family had built a new home after their other homes were vandalized, or

The Autobiography of Malcom X as Told to Alex Haley Essay
Statement of Purpose
Alex Haley is the author of the book. The central theme of the book is to reflect the perspective of a
black man in an era that called for equality struggles between races in the United States while
battling views on racism and his rise and fall within the Nation of Islam religion.
The author's purpose for writing the book was for the reader to gain knowledge of Malcolm X as an
individual and not as a phenomenon. He wanted to deliver truths that spanned his brief lifetime.
Alex Haley's qualifications to write the book were simply that he was a black man in America
during the same time span as Malcolm X and his earlier work had focused on the struggles of
African Americans in the United States in particular. Haley ... Show more content on

He becomes immersed in the night life and consumed with everything it has to offer. Just shy of
being twenty–one he was sent to prison for 10 years. At this pivotal point in his life, he converts to
the Black Muslim religion. The other crucial life altering event took place in 1963 when evidence
was uncovered regarding the Honorable Elijah Mohammad's human frailties and lack of moral
character. This revelation prompted a holy journey that yet again changed Malcolm's thought
process that was evident at the end of his life.
Critique
This autobiography of Malcolm X was spellbinding. The fascinating persona of this man was
phenomenal. As he describes his education in one part of the book, "Gentlemen, I finished the
eighth grade in Mason, Michigan. My high school was the black ghetto of Roxbury,
Massachusetts. My college was in the streets of Harlem, and my master's was taken in prison" is just
amazing. This book did not contain any illustrations, pictures, or tables. The author was extremely
descriptive in telling the story. His writing style made the reader to become a part of the story telling
experience. I could visualize the experiences and places that were included in the book. For
example, when he told about the conking of his hair, how it felt when his scalp was burning,
although it was a painful experience, it was humorous to me as a reader. I could imagine the lindy–
hopping dances he talked about. How he would whirl them around,

Elijah Muhammad Research Paper
Elijah Muhammad rose from poverty to become the controversial, charismatic leader of the black
separatist group The Nation of Islam. To this day, now under the direction of Minister Louis
Farrakhan, the NOI has maintained a consistent record of racism and anti–Semitism under the guise
of instilling African–Americans with a sense of empowerment. Charismatic ministers of "the

large numbers of blacks to the Muslim movement, leading to the establishment of NOI temples
throughout the country.
After moving to Detroit in 1923, Elijah Muhammad met W.F. Muhammad, the original founder, and
soon became his successor. W.F. Muhammad found himself in a bind when one of his followers
committed murder, in his own words, to "bring himself closer to Allah." The follower quoted from
W.F. Muhammad's booklet, Secret Rituals of the Lost–Found Nation of Islam. Disturbingly,
Satanism also does seem to be the original premise of the NOI, as W.F. Muhammad was accused of

Lansing did not hold many opportunities of any kind for a young black man then, so without a
particular plan, Malcolm X went to live with his half–sister, Ella, in Boston. Malcolm X looked, and
almost immediately found trouble. He fell in with a group of gamblers and thieves, and began
shining shoes at the Roseland State Ballroom. There he learned the trades that would eventually take
him to jail dealing in bootleg liquor and illegal drugs. Malcolm X characterized his life then as one
completely lacking in self–respect. Many journalists would emphasize Malcolm X's "shady" past
when describing the older man, his clean–cut lifestyle, and the aims of the Nation of Islam. In some
cases, these references were an attempt to damage Malcolm X's credibility, but economically
disadvantaged people have found his early years to be a point of commonality, and Malcolm X
himself was proud of how far he had come. He spared no detail of his youth in his autobiography,
and used his Nation of Islam ideas to interpret them. Dancing, drinking, and even his hair style were
represented by Malcolm X to be marks of shame and self–hatred. Relaxed hair in particular was an
anathema to Malcolm X for the rest of his life; he described his first "conk" in the autobiography
this way: "This was my first really big step toward self–degradation: when I endured all of that pain
of the hair–straightening chemicals, literally burning my flesh to have it

Analysis Of Malcolm X By William F. Martin Luther King Jr.
Growing up, every year we would learn something about Martin Luther King Jr. He was a great
man, who accomplished great things etc. But just occasionally you would catch a brief mention of
another name. He was an activist like Dr. King, but different. Radical. Dangerous. Alex Haley told
his story to millions who had never heard it before. His name was Malcolm X.
As the title of the book suggests, The Autobiography of Malcolm X tells the life story of Malcolm
Little from his childhood in Lancing, Michigan, up to his assassination (told in the epilogue) in
1965. His childhood was rough, his father was killed by a racist mob, and his mother was committed
to a mental home when he was young. After moving to Boston to live with his sister, Malcolm fell
in with the various "hustlers" in the city involved in scams, drug dealing, prostitution, etc. Things
only escalated when he moved to Harlem. While in the bustling new city, Malcolm both sold and
smoked dope, handled prostitutes, and even committed armed robbery. The major change in his life
occurs when he is arrested for the latter, right after his almost fatal conflict with a local gangster. It's
in prison where Malcolm experiences his religious conversion. Sparked by his family's new beliefs,
the letters of "The Nation of Islam Leader" Elijah Muhammad, and his habit of voracious reading,
Malcolm Little converted to The Nation of Islam, and claimed his new name of Malcolm X,
representing his lost "true family name"(Haley 186).

Throughout history there have been many people who have stood out and made an impact in the
way we think and comprehend things. During the late 1950's and early 1960's, Malcolm X was no
exception. His militant views that Western nations were inherently racist and that black people must
join together to build their own society and value system had an important influence on black
nationalist and black separatist movements of the 1950s and 1960s. At the beginning of the movie,

Malcolm didn't want to listen to him at first, but Baines's cool style helped Malcolm realize that
Islam is for him and that the white man is the devil. While in prison, Malcolm read widely and
developed an interest in the Nation of Islam, a Black Nationalist religious movement whose
members were known as Black Muslims.
Malcolm studied the teachings of the leader of the Black Muslims, Elijah Muhammad, who
advocated an independent black state. The Nation of Islam was based on a theology adapted from
several models: traditional Islamic teachings principles of Black Nationalism, and economic self–
help programs that addressed the needs of African Americans living in urban ghettoes. Unlike
traditional Islam, which rejects all forms of racism, the Nation of Islam declared that whites were
the "devil by nature," and that God was black. However, the Black Muslims predicted
that in the near future a Great War would take place in which whites would be destroyed and black
people would rule the world through the benevolence of Allah, their creator. To prepare for this new
order, the Nation of Islam stressed personal self–restraint, opposed the use of drugs and alcohol, and
organized economic self–help enterprises that eventually included farms, food stores, restaurants,
and small businesses.
The Black Muslims recruited heavily among the poorest of urban blacks and in prisons, where
Malcolm Little was converted to the faith. Instead

The Black Civil Rights Movement
The Black Civil Rights Movement of the 20th century pushed for and achieved different levels
equality through its many prominent activists. Prior to the movement, millions of Black Americans
faced brutal abuse and segregation with little to no government action taking place against such
wrongdoings. The movement included passionate advocates for black equality such as Rosa Parks,
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. These civil and human rights activists inspired millions
of Americans to join in the cause for justice and equality for all through their many unique styles.
Malcolm X was one prominent civil rights activist known for his fiery demeanor and controversial
beliefs. The underlining aspect in Malcolm's life was that he adamantly believed in was the
importance to the devotion of Islam. Through the religion Islam Malcolm X identified himself as a
human being and used his knowledge to inspire others. Malcolm X's relationship with Islam
advanced him as a civil rights activist among black Americans, which promoted social change.
In his childhood, Malcolm X experienced blatant racism towards his family. Malcolm X was born
Malcolm Little in Omaha Nebraska on May 19, 1925. He was the son of Baptist Minister Earl Little
and his mother Louise Norton Little and one of four children. Malcolm Little's father preached that
black Americans deserved the same rights as white Americans, but as a result of the times blacks
made less money and were persecuted by the KKK. Malcolm

What Is The Autobiography Of Malcolm X
I have read The Autobiography of Malcolm X twice, one before watching the movie and one after,
but after the second reading, I found out that the style of Malcolm X really is translated well to the
page. The narrator maintained his conversational tone without giving up any of the energy and
forcefulness that made him such a compelling speaker. After I had finished my second reading, I
appreciated Malcolm's choice to leave the big parts of the previous chapters, which relate with
Elijah Muhammad and the Nation of Islam as suggested by Alex Haley. In spite of these events have
affected negatively on his feeling. I thought it would have been a shame and it would have a less
suspenseful narrative if he had revised those parts to reflect his later feeling of betrayal. As Alex
mentioned in Epilogue:
"The matter was straightened out, and I sent Malcolm X some rough chapters to read. I was appalled
when they were soon returned, red–inked in many places where he had told of his almost father–
and–son relationship with Elijah Muhammad. Telephoning Malcolm X, I reminded him of his
previous decision, and I stressed that if those chapters contained such telegraphing to readers of
what would lie ahead, then the book would automatically be robbed of some of its building suspense

throughout his life time, 1925 to 1965. Hunter utilizes a combination of primary and secondary
sources to explain the impact Malcolm X had on his time period, as well as the legacy left behind
for the later generations. Though mainly using The Autobiography of Malcolm X, the author is able
to highlight the details of X's lifetime and legacy. To do this, the author makes use of chronological
order, separating each chapter as if it is a section of X's life. Each of the five main chapters are
broken down into smaller subchapter for the smaller important details. Hunter starts off describing

Malcolm X And The Prince Of Islam
Malcolm X often referred to as " The Prince of Islam" was as a blunt, straight forward, and a

Malcolm X: As Told to Alex Haley came to be as a collaboration between Malcolm X and Alex

  • 1. Malcolm X Draft 2 Kyle James January 12, 2014 U.S. History The Social Impacts of Malcolm X The Black Civil Rights Movement of the 20th century pushed for and achieved different levels equality through its many prominent activists. Prior to the movement, millions of Black Americans faced brutal abuse and segregation with little to no government action taking place against such wrongdoings. The movement included passionate advocates for black equality such as Rosa Parks, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. These civil and human rights activists inspired millions of Americans to join in the cause for justice and equality for all through their many unique styles. Eventually, Malcolm Little was caught and sentenced to prison for 10 years on robbery charges in 1946. While in prison, he heard about the African American religious group known as the Nation of Islam. The Nation of Islam was a controversial organization founded by Wallace Fard Muhammad. The organization was classified as a cult by many Americans and was known for its extremist philosophies. The main reason it attracted Malcolm Little though was because it was a large, powerful black organization. Malcolm Little was interested and decided to start making contact with the organization through letters. He eventually contacted the group's leader Elijah Muhammad. Elijah wrote to Malcolm Little saying that blacks should not be ashamed of their skin color and that blacks were not inferior to whites; whites were the ones who put blacks down. For the first time in his life, Malcolm Little began to feel he could be a part of something. He thought he could actually be accepted and become a Muslim. While Malcolm Little was raised a Baptist, he never paid much attention in church and did not understand how singing and praying would make anything better. Now that Malcolm Little had been introduced to a religion and organization that pertained more to him, he was eager. When Malcolm Little was finally let out on parole after 8 years, he instantly became a member of the Nation of Islam and cleansed his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Nation Of Islam In The Light Of Elijah Muhammad Nation of Islam in the Light of Elijah Muhammad In 1961 James Baldwin met Elijah Muhammad, the leader of the Nation of Islam movement at the time. Baldwin's experience within the Christian Church prior to his meeting with Elijah helped him analyze the Nation of Islam. This also allowed him to draw parallels between the Nation of Islam movement and the Christian Church. How James Baldwin understood the way the Christian Church worked, and a close look at the Nation of Islam, brings to light the credibility of organized religions. In 1930 Wallace D. Fard gave birth to the Nation of Islam movement. He began in Detroit going door to door preaching to black families about his remedy for their problems. He ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As for the other accounts, the lynching event did not even surface. Elijah then moved to Detroit where he met Wallace D. Fard and developed into an adamant supporter of Fard and the Nation of Islam. Elijah viewed Fard as a divine being and after Fard's disappearance, Elijah set up a second temple to the Nation of Islam in Chicago (Dodoo 1+). When James Baldwin met Elijah Muhammad and wrote "Down at the Cross", Elijah controlled the context of the Nation of Islam doctrine. The Nation of Islam believed and followed certain ideas during the reign of Elijah Muhammad. They pushed toward black separation from the "white" United States. James Baldwin and both articles written by Peter Kihss noted that they wanted the United States to hand over four or five southern states as reparations from slavery. The movement's beliefs on creation stated African Americans existed seventy–eight trillion years ago, when a black God created himself from a single atom, which formed itself from nothing. Elijah claimed, a council of twenty–four black deities ruled over the universe for the past sixty–six trillion years. Twenty–three existed as Scientists and the twenty–fourth as God or Allah over the others, who was created here on earth. These Scientists determined the history of the word in advance, and every twenty–five thousand years, each God that came after the other God made a new civilization. His ... • 3. Malcolm X Ideology Malcolm X a Black Nationalist leader was born on May 19, 1925 in Omaha, Nebraska served as a spokesmen for the Nation of Islam during the 1950s and 1960s.It is said by historians that he was the one of the reasons that the nation of Islam went form 400 members to 40,000 members from 1952 to 1960's and continued to grow well into the 1980s and into the 21st century. This was due to the fact that he gave very articulate and passionate speeches that would lead to bigger and bigger audiences. He told blacks to end racism "by any means necessary" which included violence. Malcolm X little grew up with a life of violence, growing up in rural white Nebraska Malcom X was the middle child of 8 having a mother who was a homemaker and a father who was a preacher. Because of his family being black he and his family were often harassed by white supremacist groups such as the Ku Klux Klan and the black legion. After an attack on the little household by the Ku Klux Klan that resulted in the all the houses windows smashed. Which caused the family to move to East Lansing, Michigan which was worse than Nebraska and ended with his father dead after 2 years of moving in 1931 with his death being ruled a suicide. • 5. Malcolm X : A Man Not Many People Truly Know About A righteous and amazing individual known as Malcolm X was a man not many people truly know about. Malcolm's enthusiasm in helping blacks really understand the world they live in and their credence in their society should at the least be welcomed so a correlation can be established and the world can focus on more pressing issues other than race. He was an angry, potent activist and motivated extremist for all the right reasons. In his life he had to overcome many obstacles and triumph over many predicaments that threatened him mentally and physically. Malcolm had converted to a religion and he gave it his all. Malcolm believed in the religion and its leader more than he believed in himself, just to find out things are never what they seem. People time after time tried to end his life even before he was assassinated and though he realized that his days were numbered still pushed forward. One thing we all learn in life is that your biggest enemy that you will ever face is yourself; at times he fought himself more than anyone else. In Malcolm's younger years he was quite a different type of person. At the time he was a drug dealer and though he sold drug he used them himself. He was doing petty robberies in other cities, but he was imprisoned for committing another crime. While in jail he went from being an young atheist drug dealer and addict to a proud member of the Nation of Islam. It was his brother Reginald that occasionally visited him. • 6. Malcolm X The Ballot Or The Bullet Malcolm X, a Black Nationalist, Muslim minister and a human rights activist, was executed by men from the Black Muslim Movement cult that he had recently left for good. An analysis of Malcolm X's earlier debate with Bayard Rustin (1962) in comparison to his later speech "The Ballot or the Bullet" (1964) acknowledges his idol worship of Elijah Muhammad in the Black Muslim Movement and documents his transformation into an enlightened and open–minded Civil Rights Leader before his tragic assassination. The speeches allow us to follow stages of Malcolm 's life. Malcolm's early speeches reflect the time spent in the Nation of Islam and mirrors his devotion and allegiance to the Honorable Elijah Muhammad. We witness a transformation of personal growth and enlightenment from 1962 to 1964. His later speeches, preceding his involvement with the Black Muslim Movement and Elijah Muhammad, establish his own message to his people which was Pan– Africanism. Pan–Africanism, encourages unity among people of African descent all over the world. Malcolm believed Black people should be economically independent of the White America. To understand the radical views that Malcolm held you would have to know his origin. Malcolm X was born Malcolm Little in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1925 one of eight children. Malcolm X was then sent into foster care at an early age due to his father's passing and mother's enrollment in a mental hospital in 1937. In this time he decided he would get an education. Malcolm was constantly reading books for the jail library, trying to make up for the years he missed after dropping out of High School. Malcolm also decided to neglect his last name 'little', due to being considered a relic of slavery and adopted 'X' as his new surname. 1952 – 1954 – The beginning of Nation of Islam Once Malcolm was a free man he moved Detroit and starts attending Nation of Islam meetings. Nation of Islam in the Light of Elijah Muhammad Essay Nation of Islam in the Light of Elijah Muhammad In 1961 James Baldwin met Elijah Muhammad, the leader of the Nation of Islam movement at the time. The time Baldwin spent within the Christian Church prior to his meeting with Elijah helped him analyze what the Nation of Islam did for people. It allowed him to notice that everyone needed a gimmick to keep them out of the ghetto, "and it does not matter what the gimmick is" (Baldwin 301). Baldwin realized that the Christian Church was his gimmick, so the Nation of Islam would never do for him what the Christian Church had already done. He had three main ideas he preached that helped him with sales. He wanted black separatism, everyone to know that white men were evil (which was not hard for African Americans to believe since the idea already lived within their minds), and to show the inadequacy of Christianity to African Americans. By preaching these ideas, he eventually had a following of loyal supporters of his made up religion, who of course paid money to the church. When Fard was arrested in 1933, he "admitted that his teachings were strictly a racket and he was getting all the money out of it he could" (United States 1+). What he preached aided him in his peddling. He did not take his teachings seriously yet he met a man one day that viewed him as God incarnate. One night Elijah Poole attended one of Fard's sermons and spoke with him afterwards. He told him that "you're God himself" (Marsh 39). At the time, the movement had eight thousand followers (Marsh 39). At this point, Fard needed to find adamant believers who would serve as ministers for his money making organization. At this time he recruited Elijah Poole, changed Elijah's name to Elijah Muhammad and developed him into his Chief Minister. Soon after, Fard left Detroit and Elijah took over the movement. • 10. Qualities Of Malcolm X Malcolm X is a historical figure that is remembered by all. His efforts love on without him as America attempts to follow his main principle and "live together in justice and love" (Shabazz xvii). Malcolm X was an honest and fair man that developed his persona by accepting his faults, voicing his opinions, and treating everyone equally. His qualities were expressed in his autobiography as he developed from a misguided teenager to a freedom fighter. Malcolm was recognized for accepting his faults to others. Even his daughter, Atallah Shabazz, recollects about his bluntness. In the text it states, "Hustling, numbers running, stealing... Indeed these accounts were factual and he was always the first to tell them" (Haley & Shabazz xv). This quote recalls all of Malcolm's misguided, illegal actions as a teenager. Not only does it show perseverance in change, but, it glorifies his honesty as Malcolm is the first one that owns up to his mistakes. Another example of his honesty is mentioned when he starts his rendezvous with "Sophia". In the text it states, "One of the shames that I have carried for years is that I blame myself for all of this. To have treated her as I did for a white woman, made the doubly heavy" (Haley & Shabazz 72). In this passage, Malcolm hurts the feelings of a genuine girl that he, himself has feelings for to go after a white woman that would boost his ego. The Nation of Islam On October 7, 1897 in Sandersville, Georgia, a woman named Marie Poole gave birth to a boy who she named Elijah. Elijah's parents were sharecroppers, and this father was a Baptist minister (Black Supremacists, 25). After an eighth grade education, in 1931, Elijah Poole moved to Detroit where, he says, he met "Allah in person". This was a man named Fard Muhammad–"The first and only man born in Mecca who came to America for the express purpose of teaching the so–called Negro" (Mr. Muhammad Speaks, 103). During the meal, Elijah Muhammad asked James Baldwin to join his cause and become a member of the Nation of Islam. Baldwin indirectly hinted that he didn't want to become a member of the Nation of Islam. Baldwin said that he "left the church twenty years ago and [he hasn't] joined anything since" (Baldwin, 327). He told Muhammad that he was a writer and that he likes "doing things alone" (Baldwin, 327). The decision to not join the Nation of Islam is one of the main foci of "Down at the Cross". And while the reasons he vocalized to Muhammad aren't bad, it goes without saying that nobody would decline membership to such a powerful organization, offered by the leader himself, just because they "like doings things alone". Elijah Muhammad was insane. His teachings were evil and racist. And having a thorough knowledge of what exactly the Nation of Islam was helps explain why James Baldwin truly made the decision he made. After his encounter with Fard Muhammad, Elijah Muhammad founded his first temple in Detroit, and then moved to Chicago where he set up the headquarters for the Nation of Islam. He was arrested for lecturing against negroes fighting "the white man's war", and although he was absolved of sedition, he was later found guilty of draft dodging and served three years in the Federal Correction Institution at Milan, Michigan in 1943 (Mr. Muhammad Speaks, 103). • 35. What Is The Autobiography Of Malcolm X I have read The Autobiography of Malcolm X twice, one before watching the movie and one after, but after the second reading, I found out that the style of Malcolm X really is translated well to the page. The narrator maintained his conversational tone without giving up any of the energy and forcefulness that made him such a compelling speaker. After I had finished my second reading, I appreciated Malcolm's choice to leave the big parts of the previous chapters, which relate with Elijah Muhammad and the Nation of Islam as suggested by Alex Haley. In spite of these events have affected negatively on his feeling. I thought it would have been a shame and it would have a less suspenseful narrative if he had revised those parts to reflect his later feeling of betrayal. As Alex mentioned in Epilogue: "The matter was straightened out, and I sent Malcolm X some rough chapters to read. I was appalled when they were soon returned, red–inked in many places where he had told of his almost father– and–son relationship with Elijah Muhammad. Telephoning Malcolm X, I reminded him of his previous decision, and I stressed that if those chapters contained such telegraphing to readers of what would lie ahead, then the book would automatically be robbed of some of its building suspense ... The author affectively uses The Autobiography of Malcolm X as a primary source, as well as other accounts and articles doing with those close with X. Despite this, the use of multiple sources became confusing as a result of the lack of citations and multiple writers. Since each chapter had a different writer, reading became inconsistent. It is notable that the author attempts to avoid disorganization by creating subheading and a well structured table of contents. Hunter also does a remarkable job of adding an index, timeline, appendix of documents, and additional research page in order to allow readers to dive deeper into the topic. Through all this work and attempted organization, Hunter is able to emphasize to the audience the legacy Malcolm X left behind as a result of the trials and tribulations faced during his ...
