Malcolm X College was the first of the City Colleges of Chicago and is still a significant part

History
Originally known as Crane Junior College, the school was first established in 1911. It was
the first of the City College of Chicago, but others soon appeared. During the Great Depression,
the entire community college network in Chicago almost closed, but the school was
kept open under the name of Theodore Herzl Junior College beginning in 1934. In the midst of
World War II, the U.S. Navy leased the facility to use as a training ground for thousands of
Navy personnel. In 1969, the college was renamed once again in order to pay homage to the
assassinated civil rights advocate, Malcolm X. The same year, the school moved to its current
location on the West Side of Chicago.
In 2012, Malcolm X College proudly announced that the City of Chicago was assisting the
school in creating a $251 million, state­of­the­art facility in order to better serve the needs of
the school’s numerous healthcare students.

Malcolm X College offers open admission, so anyone who wishes to further their
education can enroll in classes. Most classes are held on the main campus, although there is
also an auxiliary site known as the West Side Learning Center. Students can choose to
pursue one of a wide variety of Associate’s degrees within the divisions of arts, general
studies, sciences, and applied sciences.
Malcolm X College has established itself as having the largest selection of healthcare
science degrees within Cook County. In order to provide high quality education to students
interested in careers in the healthcare industry, Malcolm X maintains many partnerships
within the field. These partnerships allow students to benefit froma connection with Rush
University Medical Center as well as 18 other organizations within the industry. Students

2. are also able to perform their clinicals at the Beacon College for Health Science Education.
Location
Malcolm X College’s main campus is situated in the West Side of Chicago near the
Illinois Medical District. The campus is close to the blue line, so residents can easily use
public transportation to reach their classes. Since the college is located in Chicago,
students benefit from the diverse cultural events and activities that are available in a big
city.
Reviews
One of the biggest selling points for the college is that it ischeap and accessible. For students
interested in a healthcare career, it is a great opportunity. However, many students complain
that the student body in general is not very motivated, which makes the college a
lackluster learning environment.
