DISUMMIT Keynote presentation from Kirk Borne - From Sensors to Sense-Making DigitYser
Dr. Kirk Borne is a Principal Data Scientist at Booz Allen Hamilton. With a rich background in Astrophysics and Computational Science, he was a precursor on implementing courses of big data in academia. He is one of the most important promotors of data literacy in the world.
About Kirk and his view on data literacy and evolution
On his first visit to Brussels, Kirk first activity was sharing his best practices to promote data literacy. While enjoying a magnificent view of Brussels from the ING headquarter building, Kirk playfully (with a pair of socks!) explained how subjectivity plays a major role in the way that data is understood, derived by the wide variety of involved. This keynote was delivered at the speakers reception, which took place the day before the DI Summit.
The following day, Kirk wrapped up the DI summit with his closing keynote on how data has shifted into something that is sense-making, following the evolution from “data” to “big data” into “smart data” composed by both enriched and semantic data and essential for IoT. He also discussed the levels of maturity in a self-driving enterprise, wrapping up his participation sharing this equation:
Big Data + IoT + Citizen Data Scientists = Partners in Sustainability
Kirk’s impression on the DI Summit was that it was a fun and informative event to join. His favorite format were the 5” pitches, as they were properly structured, providing the most critical information to the attendees. He also think that the networking dynamic ensured that all attendees met interesting people.
A takeaway from Kirk’s presentation
“Big data is not about how big it is, but the value you extract from it”
We look forward to have Kirk sometime soon back in Brussels!

Statistics: Visualizing Data
Introductory Essay from the Locks
The Reality Today
All of us now are being blasted by information design. It's being poured into our eyes
through the Web, and we're all visualizers now; we're all demanding a visual aspect to
our information… And if you're navigating a dense information jungle, coming across
a beautiful graphic or a lovely data visualization, it's a relief, it's like coming across a
clearing in the jungle. –David McCandless
In today’s complex ‘information jungle,’ David McCandless observes that “Data is the new soil.”
McCandless, a data journalist and information designer, celebrates data as a ubiquitous resource
providing a fertile and creative medium from which new ideas and understanding can grow.
McCandless’s inspiration, statistician Hans Rosling, builds on this idea in his own TEDTalk with his
compelling image of flowers growing out of data/soil. These ‘flowers’ represent the many insights that
can be gleaned from effective visualization of data.
We’re just learning how to till this soil and make sense of the mountains of data constantly being
generated. As Gary King, Director of Harvard’s Institute for Quantitative Social Science says in his New
York Times article “The Age of Big Data”:
“It’s a revolution. We’re really just getting under way. But the march of quantification,
made possible by enormous new sources of data, will sweep through academia,
business and government. There is no area that is going to be untouched.”
How do we deal with all this data without getting information overload? How do we use data
to gain real insight into the world? Finding ways to pull interesting information out of data can
be very rewarding, both personally and professionally. The managing editor of Financial Times
observed on CNN’s Your Money: “The people who are able to in a sophisticated and practical
way analyze that data are going to have terrific jobs." Those who learn how to present data in
effective ways will be valuable in every field.

Many people, when they think of data, think of tables filled with numbers. But this long-held notion is
eroding. Today, we’re generating streams of data that are often too complex to be presented in a
simple “table.” In his TEDTalk, Blaise Aguera y Arcas explores images as data, while Deb Roy uses
audio, video, and the text messages in social media as data.
Some may also think that only a few specialized professionals can draw insights from data. When we
look at data in the right way, however, the results can be fun, insightful, even whimsical--and accessible
to everyone! Who knew, for example, that there are more relationship break-ups on Monday than on
any other day of the week, or that ...
Understanding your audience and considering them in your design is essential for building great visualizations. This deck will walk you through the critical steps for identifying and understanding your audience, and developing a complex visualization storyboard to share your message.
Explainable AI is not yet Understandable AIepsilon_tud
Keynote of Dr. Nava Tintarev at RCIS'2020. Decision-making at individual, business, and societal levels is influenced by online content. Filtering and ranking algorithms such as those used in recommender systems are used to support these decisions. However, it is often not clear to a user whether the advice given is suitable to be followed, e.g., whether it is correct, whether the right information was taken into account, or if the user’s best interests were taken into consideration. In other words, there is a large mismatch between the representation of the advice by the system versus the representation assumed by its users. This talk addresses why we (might) want to develop advice-giving systems that can explain themselves, and how we can assess whether we are successful in this endeavor. This talk will also describe some of the state-of-the-art in explanations in a number of domains (music, tweets, and news articles) that help link the mental models of systems and people. However, it is not enough to generate rich and complex explanations; more is required in order to understand and be understood. This entails among other factors decisions around which information to select to show to people, and how to present that information, often depending on the target users and contextual factors
This presentation analyzes the TED Talk by Susan Etlinger on "What do you do with all this big data". Gathering the insights and employing them are the two important things exhibited by the presentation.

Title: The Elusive Nature of Software Documentation and Why Understanding How Knowledge Flows Matters
Abstract: Many developers consider writing documentation to be a painful and under-appreciated activity, yet the same developers often complain that a lack of documentation significantly hampers their work. Other developers argue that documentation is passé as developers more readily curate and exchange knowledge through networked platforms such as Slack, Twitter, and Stack Overflow. And while the savvy modern developer will know who to follow, who to ask, and where to look when they need software knowledge, finding the right knowledge at the right time remains a serious development bottleneck for many. Recognizing that these platforms contain golden nuggets of useful information, we see tremendous effort being directed at designing methods for capturing, mining, extracting, and distributing software knowledge, but will they succeed if we lack a good understanding of how knowledge flows in software development projects and communities? Through this talk, I will discuss the elusive nature of documentation and why I believe documentation will always be hard to define, capture, distribute, keep up to date, and to find, and I will argue that we should focus more on understanding, supporting, and amplifying knowledge flow in distributed software development.
