On May 9th, Europe Day is celebrated to commemorate the 1950 Schuman Declaration that helped establish the European Union. The Schuman Declaration by French foreign minister Robert Schuman proposed a reconciliation with Germany and economic cooperation between European countries. Since then, May 9th has become a symbol of European unity, marked with festivals, programs, and activities that bring together EU member states. Hungary joined the EU in 2004, so it celebrates two important events in May related to its membership in Europe.
