The National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design is undertaking two main digital collection management projects. The first is implementing a new collection management system between 2015-2019 to prepare for their move to a new building. The second is a machine learning project from 2015-2016 to explore using computer vision and AI to classify artworks and generate metadata to help users explore the collection. They are working with an outside company to test algorithms on sample images from the collection. The goal is to automatically recognize styles, techniques and other attributes to create reusable data about the artworks.

3. Project New CMS
• The National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design will move to a new building in 2019, which will be opened to the general public in
2020.
• A need for a state-of-the-art CMS that meets the museum's requirements. In addition to the traditional catalogue function, the system
should also cover extended museum functions, as well as options for digitized planning and process management.
• A new CMS, should increase the efficiency of museum work and strengthen collaboration across the organization.
• A new CMS is a vital prerequisite to enable the safe movement of the collections to the new museum.
• A new CMS should support better integration of international standards for collection documentation, management, research and
communication within the organization.
• According to the National Museum's digital strategy, the following digital options should be present in all new IT solutions:
• The solution provides easy access to the desired information.
• The solution makes it possible to explore content in detail.
• The solution has been carefully considered, well designed and built.
• The solution is available across multiple platforms.
• The solution has open and shareable digital options.
• The solution has sustainable and scalable digital options.
• The solutions permit central control - Create Once – Publish Everywhere (COPE).
• The solution protects content (with access and backup guarantees).
If practicable, the National Museum shall offer digital end-to-end experiences that link together the public's encounter with museum exhibitions to websites and digital units. It is an
objective that content in digital form can be easily reused on various platforms in different contexts.

• 2017: Project planning and data cleaning.
• 2018: Conversion of data, implementation and acceptance testing.
• 2018/2019: Approval of delivery and live launch.

7. Project Principal Components
 Machine vision, Deep-learning and Artificial Neural Networks
 Cooperation with the IT and design company Bengler and supported by the Arts Council
Norway
 Seeing how algorithms in artificial neural networks can interpret images,
generate useful art historical data, and assist in exploring the collection.
 For us, some core questions in the Principal Components-project are; can we
teach computer algorithms to recognize and identify motifs, techniques and
periods in artworks? How accurate can algorithms trained on art collections
data get? Will we be able to produce reusable classifications?
