Magnetic tape is the oldest magnetic storage device, using thin tape wrapped around reels to store data in sequences of 1s and 0s. While slow, magnetic tape provides large storage capacity and is inexpensive, making it suitable for backing up computer networks. Floppy disks also used magnetic technology to store data on thin, plastic disks. Though once common, floppy disks had very low storage capacity and data transfer rates, and the disks were delicate.
