In 1561, King Philip II moved the royal court from Toledo to Madrid, establishing it as the capital. It is located along the Manzanares River and contains important landmarks like the Royal Palace, Puerta de Alcalá arch, Cibeles Fountain, Plaza Mayor, and Retiro Park.
