The crystal ball is murky when it comes to
predictions about energy consumption, markets
and future trends.
Consider hydraulic fracturing, for example.
Ten years ago, the U.S. Geological Survey
estimated resource potential in the Marcellus
Shale region was off by 70 times, according to
current federal surveys.
"I think it's essentially impossible to antici-
pate what energy markets are going to look like
in 20 or 30 years, because the rate of change in
technology and potential for climate change are
so great and so disruptive that the world is go-
ing to be fundamentally different than it is now,"
said John Petersen, the founder of the Arlington
Institute, a nonprofit research organization that
focuses on future global trends.
Howard Gruenspecht, administrator of
the U.S. Energy Information Administration,
echoed similar thoughts about the future.
"Predicting a particular game-changing
technology is difficult, if not impossible, to do,"
he said.
Despite this limitation, Gruenspecht said
his analysts spend a significant amount of time
thinking about how technological change might
occur in North American energy markets, where
crude oil prices have exceeded natural gas
prices by a 4-to-l ratio on an energy-equivalent
basis—converting the current price of crude oil
to its natural gas equivalent rate.
"Tlie implication is that there currently exists
a four-fold price advantage for substituting
natural gas for oil-based products," he said. This
price disparity could potentially last for some
time, triggering the deployment of natural gas
vehicle infrastructure because of favorable
market signals to investors.
Futurists like Petersen believe the electric
grid and energy markets are especially suscep-
tible to wild card events like drastic changes
in consumption, geopolitics, solar flares and
changing societal values.
"There is a new generation of young people
who see their relationship to the environment,
to the Earth and their social relationships with
one another in a really different way than all of
us old guys," he said.
Their strong reaction to a wild card event
could galvatiize them to say "never again" in the
same way that Three Mile Island impacted the
nuclear power industry.
"Industries and policymakers need to be
sensitive to this," Peterson said.
Expect the Unexpected
State policymakers can prepare to deal
with this unpredictable future in several ways,
Petersen said.
"Resilience is extraordinarily important,
not only for physical shocks to the system,
but there also needs to be resilience in terms
of technology," he said. Decision-makers also
need a "mechanism for anticipation, as well as
a commitment to use foresight in planning."
That's true, also, for utilities.
"I know this sounds antithetical to many
utilities, but they need more agility, even in
such a capital-intensive industry," Petersen
said.

After that, I will briefly recommend how Big D incorporated can penetrate into that market and become competitively profitable. Let’s get started.

Understanding the educational backgrounds, race compositions, means of transport preferred in a region and the status of families in a potential market is crucial in determining whether to penetrate the market and how to do so in a way that a business is guaranteed to enjoy success. Using the US data as the base standard to inform what to expect in Chicago or how to approach Chicago ensures that the unknown can be measured against the known thus informing key marketing strategies (Tien and Ngoc, 2019) The above data for instance allows us to compare the highest level of education in Chicago against that of US in general and understand the target audience of our products better. While in the US the highest share of populants of 28.6% only has a high school certificate and 21.05% only have some college education with no degree, Chicago is made up of 44.19% college graduates and 33.99% of graduate degree holders. This is impressive because if these values reflect in the population’s earnings, Big D stands a great chance of encountering robust growth in this region. One shocking statistic from this data however is that unlike in the overall US population where 75.7% of people prefer to drive alone to work, only 39.5% of people in Chicago drive alone. This value demands that Big D further investigate the spending patterns of Chicago residents before penetrating the market.

Accompanying this technological change and augmented by it, globalization has
proceeded apace. Capital mobility across borders has continued to increase, both in
terms of portfolio investments that cross borders and in terms of the reach of
multinational corporations. International trade in goods and services has continued
to expand, fueled by decreases in information costs, technological changes, and
greater policy openness to trade in many countries. Migration, while more limited by
national barriers, has also had an important impact in many places over this time
period.
Over this period of technological change and globalization, the role of labor and
capital has also changed in important ways throughout the global economy. A

Stewart Strawbridge is the founder of the global long-short equity firm Selkirk Partners, which was established in 2008. With responsibilities ranging from research to portfolio management, Stewart Strawbridge is experienced with all types of long-short equity investment funds.
Long-short equity refers to an investment strategy that looks to do long-term investing in established companies with annual growth that are undervalued, and short-sell other stocks that are overvalued. The main goal of this type of fund is to minimize risk for the investor in the long term. There are three main types of long-short equity investment funds.
There are sector-specific funds available for investors that want to focus on certain industries or niches. These include areas such as healthcare, pharmaceuticals, technology, and construction. Investors can choose industries that have steadily grown over many years, as well as emerging industries that are on the rise.
Geographic long-short equity funds are based on specific regions of the world. Some funds focus specifically on the United States, Canada, Europe, or Asia, for example. There are also market-neutral funds that are specifically designed to minimize the risk caused by market segment volatility.

In this presentation, I will compare and contrast Chicago’s general summary, census trends, occupation and employment statistics and Chicago’s Income summary to that of the US. After that, I will briefly recommend how Big D incorporated can penetrate into that market and become competitively profitable. Let’s get started.

Understanding the educational backgrounds, race compositions, means of transport preferred in a region and the status of families in a potential market is crucial in determining whether to penetrate the market and how to do so in a way that a business is guaranteed to enjoy success. Using the US data as the base standard to inform what to expect in Chicago or how to approach Chicago ensures that the unknown can be measured against the known thus informing key marketing strategies (Tien and Ngoc, 2019) The above data for instance allows us to compare the highest level of education in Chicago against that of US in general and understand the target audience of our products better. While in the US the highest share of populants of 28.6% only has a high school certificate and 21.05% only have some college education with no degree, Chicago is made up of 44.19% college graduates and 33.99% of graduate degree holders. This is impressive because if these values reflect in the population’s earnings, Big D stands a great chance of encountering robust growth in this region. One shocking statistic from this data however is that unlike in the overall US population where 75.7% of people prefer to drive alone to work, only 39.5% of people in Chicago drive alone. This value demands that Big D further investigate the spending patterns of Chicago residents before penetrating the market.

Accompanying this technological change and augmented by it, globalization has
proceeded apace. Capital mobility across borders has continued to increase, both in
terms of portfolio investments that cross borders and in terms of the reach of
multinational corporations. International trade in goods and services has continued
to expand, fueled by decreases in information costs, technological changes, and
greater policy openness to trade in many countries. Migration, while more limited by
national barriers, has also had an important impact in many places over this time
period.
Over this period of technological change and globalization, the role of labor and
capital has also changed in important ways throughout the global economy. A
generation ago, students of economics were often taught that the labor share and
capital share of all income generated in the economy should be expected to be
roughly constant over long periods of time, with about 70 percent of national income

The U.S. economy is continuing its impressive recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and not slowing down despite re-occurring bumps. The U.S. savings rate reached its highest ever recorded level at 34% in April 2020 and Americans seem ready to spend. The sectors that had been hurt the most by the pandemic specifically reduced consumer spending, like retail, leisure, hospitality, and travel, are now experiencing massive growth in revenue and job openings.
Could this growth lead to a “Roaring Twenties”? As quickly as the U.S. economy contracted, experiencing a 9.1% drop in economic output relative to the business cycle in Q2 2020, the largest in recorded history, it has rebounded beyond expectations. This surprising growth seems to be fueled by the U.S. government’s aggressive fiscal and monetary policies, and an increase in consumer spending as mobility restrictions are lifted. Unemployment rates between June 2020 and June 2021 decreased by 5.2%, while the demand for labor is increasing, coupled with increasing wages to incentivize Americans to rejoin the labor force. Schools and businesses are expected to fully reopen soon. In parallel, vaccination rates across the country and the world continue to rise, with full vaccination rates of 50% and 14.8% respectively.
However, it is not completely smooth sailing from here. According to M Capital Group, the main risks that threaten the continued growth of the U.S. economy are inflation, unsettled trade relations, and another wave of Covid-19 mutations that could shut down the world again. Have we learned from the past year of COVID-19 and adapted our economy accordingly?
“In order for the U.S. economy to continue growing, whether there is another wave or not, the U.S. needs to focus on diversifying supply chains, supporting business investment, and maintaining consumer spending,” says Grace Feeley, a research analyst at M Capital Group.
While the economic indicators are positive, the risks are coming closer to manifesting and threatening such growth. The new variants spreading throughout the world, Delta, Lambda, and Gamma, are vaccine-resistant and muddy the predictions made about the economy and health of the country. These variants bring back the feeling of uncertainty that has wreaked havoc not only on the stock market but the mindset of people around the world.
