Ibj indiana resists call for renewable energy mandates 11-28-10ReBloom UpTown
Indiana is one of only 14 states that has resisted establishing renewable energy standards. This leaves the state at a disadvantage for attracting new green businesses according to critics. While Indiana has attracted some wind projects, advocates argue these have been driven by renewable standards in other states and only account for a small portion of the state's energy needs. Supporters argue standards would boost jobs and investment, but Indiana lawmakers have failed to pass such legislation due to concerns over rate increases and a desire to include nuclear in definitions of renewable energy. Other Midwest states like Michigan and Illinois have seen billions in green investment after implementing renewable standards.
The document discusses various topics related to green energy and stimulus funding in the United States, including:
1) Billions of dollars in federal stimulus funds have been allocated to green energy projects, though some of this money has gone to projects built before the stimulus or overseas.
2) Green energy and jobs are growing industries but definitions vary and data is mixed on actual job creation from stimulus programs.
3) Federal and state incentives like tax credits and grants have supported thousands of renewable energy projects but not all recipients have relevant experience.
How the US makes electricity…and wastes energy recycledenergy
1) The US electric grid has seen stagnant efficiency levels for 50 years, with only 12-13% of fuel converted to useful work, compared to 20% in other countries like Japan and the UK.
2) Improving energy efficiency, especially in the electric grid, is the most cost-effective way to reduce primary energy use and carbon emissions. Denmark has shown that following an efficiency-focused policy can reduce energy use by 28% while still achieving economic growth.
3) However, US energy policy tends to only focus on increasing supply or reducing demand, ignoring the potential to improve efficiency of energy conversion in the electric grid and other sectors.

With one solar panel in the state for every 28 people, Washington is falling behind a majority of states in an annual ranking of solar power capacity, despite having the technical potential to produce 21 times as much electricity from solar power as the state consumes each year. In this year’s ranking, Washington dropped to 27th in total solar capacity and 30th in total solar capacity per capita, after ranking 25th in both categories last year.
The document discusses various technologies and solutions related to clean energy and the transition to renewable sources, including solar power, geothermal, wave energy, electric vehicles, and biomass. It notes the economic and environmental benefits of investing in these areas, such as reduced costs, job growth, and decreased emissions. However, it also examines political and economic factors that have prevented more widespread adoption of these solutions, such as opposition from fossil fuel industries and politicians dependent on these industries. It argues that transforming society into a true democracy focused on sustainability, rather than a "corporatocracy" prioritizing profit, is necessary to fully realize a transition to clean energy and a greener economy.
The document discusses the transition to clean energy and sustainable technologies. It provides examples of innovative clean energy technologies and summarizes benefits of investing in solar energy research, including a triple return on investment, 50% reduction in solar costs, and significant emissions reductions. However, it notes that political and economic factors have prevented a full transition, with politicians influenced by fossil fuel industries resisting climate policies due to perceived economic threats. It calls for governments and citizens to transform systems from a corporatocracy to a true democracy that supports well-being and sustainability.

This session, “The Energy Revolution: Finding Powerful Stories Everywhere,” was first offered as part of the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association’s annual conference on Aug. 23, 2013.
You keep hearing about “fracking” in western Pennsylvania and North Dakota, but can’t imagine how it would affect your community.
Marilyn Geewax, a senior business editor with NPR, will help you understand how this unleashing of massive supplies of fossil fuels is changing all of our lives. The energy revolution is making U.S. manufacturing competitive again and soon could be generating millions of jobs from Maine to California. And it’s having a broad impact on the environment, tax revenues and politics.
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
Every American has a stake in these changes; all journalists need to understand the basics – and to look for the local angles. Here’s what this session will help you understand:
1) Fracking – What exactly is it, and why does this drilling process generate so much oil and gas – and controversy? Get familiar with the basic terms of the debate so you feel comfortable setting out to tell a story about it.
2) Manufacturing – Economists say fracking is transforming manufacturing. Huh? Get a clearer understanding of the direct link between the drilling process and the revival of many factories.
3) Jobs, Jobs, Jobs – Many optimists say the energy revolution will help create millions of jobs. Some communities will be building bigger ports to export liquefied natural gas and others will be gaining pipeline-construction jobs. Many may be able to build new infrastructure with revenues from drilling leases. But if cheap energy makes it easier to automate, will some jobs be lost?
4) The Environment – Environmentalists are raising serious questions about water use, pollution, earthquakes, and the overall wisdom of increasing the use of fossil fuels like oil and gas. What’s at stake?
5) The Local Angle –The energy revolution is generating changes all around us – and you, as a journalist, will see the local angles once you know how to spot changes in your own community.

Technologies & policies for a sustainable energy future keynote by dr. mari...TNenergy
1) Emerging economies like China and India will drive increased global energy demand over the next 25 years, increasing their share of global energy consumption. Many countries will become more dependent on oil and gas imports, though the US may become a net exporter.
2) The world is closing in on the limit of a 2 degree Celsius rise in global temperatures, with four-fifths of allowable carbon emissions already "locked in" by existing energy infrastructure.
3) Opportunities exist to improve US energy efficiency through policies that promote technologies like advanced meters, home automation systems, and distributed generation. However, myths about the potential for efficiency and renewable energy need to be addressed to change energy perceptions and policies.
Recycled Energy: Is the Future In Front of Us?recycledenergy
The document discusses opportunities for increasing energy efficiency in the United States through capturing wasted heat from industrial processes and power plants. It notes that other countries achieve 20-25% efficiency in energy usage compared to 12-13% in the US, and that policies in the US have discouraged investments in efficiency. Recycling wasted heat and implementing policy changes around electricity markets and environmental regulations could significantly increase energy supplies while reducing costs and pollution.

The document discusses the clean energy economy in the United States and globally. It provides statistics on clean energy jobs and investments in the U.S. and other G20 countries from 1998 to 2009. The U.S. led in clean energy jobs in 2007 with over 770,000 jobs. However, the document warns that without sufficient federal policy that provides long-term market signals, such as a national carbon cap and renewable energy standards, the U.S. risks falling behind other countries in the growing global clean energy market.
The document summarizes a presentation by Kateri Callahan, President of the Alliance to Save Energy, about the potential for increased energy efficiency. The Alliance is a nonprofit organization that works with public and private sectors to promote energy efficiency. Callahan discusses how energy efficiency has quietly achieved success in reducing costs and emissions. New "game changers" like climate change, energy security concerns, and economic savings create opportunities for much greater efficiency gains. Leadership from companies like Walmart and utilities investing more in efficiency show the enormous untapped potential. Public policy support for efficiency standards, codes, and financing can help efficiency "roar" in the coming decade to address energy and climate challenges.
Energy in the New Administration: The Integration and Synthesis of Policy, Te...Alliance To Save Energy
It’s a hot topic with questions soon to be answered in the post-election fall-out: What is the energy outlook for the next Administration and Congress? Can we expect another monumental energy act to continue the deeds of EISA 2007? When will we see substantial growth in the ‘green collar’ workforce? What role will technology play in new energy policies? And – important to the Alliance to Save Energy and its allies – how and when will the government ‘ramp up’ its energy efficiency programs, which currently receive only about $3-4 billion a year? Brian Castelli, Executive VP of Programs and Development at the Alliance addressed these topics and others at his September 18th presentation to an audience at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburg, Penn., entitled Energy in the New Administration: The Integration and Synthesis of Policy, Technology & Innovation.
ElectricityMatch.com provides an overview of electric utility fuel sources and prices in the United States. It finds that while natural gas generation has increased due to lower emissions, coal still accounts for about half of all generation. Natural gas prices are more volatile than stable coal prices. Overall, average retail electric prices have steadily increased in recent decades. Renewable energy makes up a small and growing and share of generation. Rapidly phasing out coal may significantly increase electric prices unless alternatives can reasonably replace it without major rate changes.
Governors from 21 states signed a letter urging Congress to extend the wind production tax credit to support the wind energy industry and jobs in their states. They note that the tax credit is set to expire at the end of 2012 and that its uncertainty is already causing the wind industry to slow down project development and lay off employees. Losing the tax credit could lead to major job losses. The governors ask Congress to pass a multi-year extension of at least 4 years to provide long-term policy certainty and allow the industry to grow.
The leaders of the US, Canada, and Mexico pledged to generate half of North America's electricity from zero-carbon sources within 10 years. To achieve this, they will need to invest billions in new wind, solar, hydroelectric, and nuclear projects, adopt incentives, and promote regional energy trade. Experts say the largest burden will fall to the US due to its much larger energy market compared to Mexico and Canada. Major transmission lines will also be needed to connect areas with renewable energy supplies to population centers.
This document discusses the importance of the manufacturing industry to the US economy. It provides facts about recent trends in manufacturing, including that (1) the US has become more attractive for reshoring due to cheap natural gas, with chemicals and metals seeing the most reshoring, (2) the largest metro areas expanding manufacturing are Houston, Seattle, and Oklahoma City, and (3) manufacturing contributes $2.09 trillion to the economy and has the highest multiplier effect of any sector.

Ralph Izzo, CEO of PSEG, addressed a national energy workforce development summit. He argued that the energy industry can drive economic growth and job creation during difficult economic times, while also combating climate change. Izzo urged energy companies to focus on workforce development and stressed that utilities can play a key role in addressing climate change through green jobs. He said that developing the workforce will be the largest effort since building the electric grid a century ago. Izzo believes the energy industry can be a major job creator with high-paying green jobs over the next 30 years.

The Pew Clean Energy Program aims to accelerate the clean energy economy over the next five years. It promotes policy changes in four sectors: industry, utilities, transportation, and research and development. The program's goals are to generate jobs, businesses and investments while expanding clean energy production and reducing emissions. Combined heat and power (CHP) is an efficient clean energy technology that generates electricity and thermal power from a single fuel source. Doubling CHP in the US could create 1 million jobs, save $234 billion, and reduce total energy use by 3%. The program encourages businesses to support policies that incentivize CHP and other industrial efficiency technologies.

4. Create jobs: Create 460 construction jobs
over two years and 48 permanent jobs.
5. Save money: Is expected to cut consumer
rates by $3.3 million in 2015, growing to
$10 million annually by 2017.
6. Benefit farmers and the state: Landowners that allow turbines
on their land will be paid $3.2 million annually and the state is
expected to generate more than $360 million in additional
property tax revenues over the next 30 years.
7. Attract businesses: Facebook recently chose to locate a new
data center in Iowa, in part because the company wants to
meet its goal of getting 25% of its power from clean sources.
8. It's no wonder that clean energy enjoys such strong support
when projects like this are creating jobs, attracting
investment, saving consumers money and reducing pollution.
More than 70% of Americans support expanding wind power
and a whopping 85% of Iowans see wind energy as a positive
for the state.
9. Smart politicians of both parties have already seen that
running on an overwhelmingly popular issue like wind power
can contribute to winning campaigns. In our Running Clean
report, we describe the way that President Obama
campaigned on wind energy during the 2012 election
10. . He cited his support for federal tax incentives for wind
energy (and his opponent's opposition to them) during stump
speeches, in a television ad and in a special website dedicated
to Iowa wind. Conservative Republicans in the state like Rep.
Steve King and Rep. Tom Latham took the same position as
the president, supporting wind energy and even urging Mitt
Romney to change his mind. On election day, the President
won the state by 6 points.
11. While some Members of Congress and other Washington
insiders may think of clean energy as a wedge issue, the news
out of the heartland shows that isn't the case on the ground.
In the real world, clean energy is creating jobs and saving
consumers money. And those are concepts that voters in both
parties can agree on.
