Design and evaluate a resilient prototype for m-Health system to transmit patient data using a suitable
signalling and standards
Naktal Edan , School of Science and Technology The University of Northampton .. naktal.edan@northamptom.ac.uk
Related Work
Several mobile health systems were developed using various networks/protocols/standards. Healthcare information systems
have been gaining considerable attention by many institutions including universities and medical companies. To develop the
communication channels between the patient and the health services, many networks have been used including as GPRS(
General Packet Radio Service), GSM(Global System for Mobile Communications), IP(Internet Protocol), UMTS(Universal
Mobile Telecommunications System), Wi-Fi(Wireless Fidelity), Satellite, WAVE(Wireless Access for Vehicular Environment),
WiMAX(Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) (Lee & Lai 2012).
Aim
The aim of this research work is to propose a design and implementation prototype of a real-time m-health communication
system for a mobile unit using telemedicine techniques via mobile internet networks. The prototype will then be evaluated
against healthcare information standards such as IEEE1073 and PAS 754.
Objectives
1-Design and implement a prototype of the ambulance based on m-Health software ( Front and back ends ) under British
Standard-TSI.
2-Send the data based on internet using a suitable signalling protocol under the health device communication standards.
3-Test the ambulance transmission-based m-Health prototype system (software and hardware)
4-Evaluate the prototype system and find out the optimum signalling protocol for the ambulance based on m- Health system.

Introduction
Mobile heath is defined as the provision of healthcare services through the use of information and communication technologies
(ICT) in order to maintain good quality welfare. Recently, the use of m-health has been picking a lot of momentum within the
research communities, medical companies, and governments. The term m-health refers to the ability of accessing patients’
records or status from mobile & immobile units such as an ambulance, home, and office etc. via mobile devices (Xu et al.
2014).
Expected result
• The proposed system should develop an effective platform for mobile devices for the purpose of providing communication
between a patient and a healthcare system. Mobile/ internet networks technology, such as 3G or 4G will be used in this system.
• The system should achieve and ensure a reliable transmission of signals that hold patient’s data in real-time without the loss of
information. The main limitation of such a proposed system lies within sending a significant amount of data at high rates.
• The system should provide two-way communication for exchanging information between the patient and emergency services.
• The system should have the flexibility to be used with either mobile and immobile units.
• The system will be in accordance with approved standards in health care and software.
