The LUNGS
Lungs are baglike organs, used for breathing. They are part of the
body’s respiratory system.
We have two lungs, one on each side
of the chest. The heart is located between
the lungs. The right lung has three rounded
sections called lobes. The left lung has two
lobes. The base of each lung rests on a
strong sheet of muscle called the diaphragm.

Main Parts and Function
Trachea
The trachea is a tube that
carries the air in and out of your
lungs. It is also called a windpipe.
The lungs begin at the
bottom of your trachea.
6
trachea
Where do you think is
your trachea?
7
Main Parts and Function
Bronchus
Each lung has a tube called a
bronchus that connects to the trachea.
The trachea and bronchi airways
form an upside-down “Y” in your chest.
This “Y” is often called the bronchial
tree.
Did you know?
The plural form of
bronchus is bronchi.
8
trachea
bronchus
Main Parts and Function
Bronchioles
Bronchioles are air passages
inside the lungs that branch off like
tree limbs from the bronchi.
They carry oxygen rich air into
the lungs and carry carbon dioxide rich
air out of the lungs.
bronchioles
9
Main Parts and Function
Alveoli
They are a cluster of
small air sacs at the end of each
bronchioles.
They exchange oxygen
and carbon dioxide molecules to
and from the blood stream. What do they look like?
CARE FOR THE LUNGS
10
1. Stop smoking and avoid secondhand
smoke or environmental irritants.
2. Eat food reach in antioxidants.
3. Get vaccination like the flu vaccine
and the pneumonia vaccine.
4. Exercise more frequently, which can
help your lungs function properly.
Any
questions
11
Let’s move on to the
activities.
What to do?
Create a model of the lungs and explain
what happens to them when you inhale and
exhale.
12
Just Breathe
What do you need?
Create a model of the lungs and explain
what happens to them when you inhale and
exhale.
Next:
Watch the video on the
next slide.

Just Breath Activity:
Get a sheet of paper and answer the questions below.
1. Describe what happens when you inhale (when you pull
down on the bottom balloon in your model).
2. Describe what happens when you exhale (when you push
up on the bottom balloon in your model).
3. Why do you think some people can inhale more air at
one time than others can?
4. What might happen if you punctured your chest cavity?
Answer the crossword puzzle.

2. Rounded section of the lungs.
4. The number of lungs that we have
6. Strong sheet of muscle where each lung rest.
7. They are like tree limbs sprouting from the
bronchi.
8. Cluster of air sacs at the end of bronchioles.

1. Baglike organ used for breathing.
3. Tube that connects the lungs to the trachea.
5. Tube that carries the air in and out of your
lungs.
Draw the lungs and label the parts on a
whole bond paper. Do your best!
16
Test yourself. Write your answers
on a sheet of paper.
