This document summarizes the development process of a board game about Brexit over multiple versions. It describes the initial prototype of the game (Version 1), which included collecting stars to reunite Britain and Europe. Playtesting provided feedback that led to new versions with longer boards, better icons, and additional tiles. Version 3 included roles, bosses, and a points system. Further playtesting informed Version 4 with more colors, challenges and questions tiles. The conclusion reflects on lessons learned about thorough planning and research being important for game development.

Introduction
01 An introduction to the project, specifications and
assignment brief.
3. In this assignment we have to create a paper-based game with the theme of “Brexit”.
INTRODUCTION
Specifications: Our game should include a goal and a degree of difficulty with is enhanced by skill or chance.
The game should fit onto an A4 piece of paper, start of as a one-player game, instructions should be on the A4 page and
additional articles can be used such as a dice, tokens, pencils, etc.
4. Collect Stars
The aim of this game is to collect six stars so that you can
end the game.
Reunite Britain & Europe
Once you reach the end of the board, you need six stars
to reunite Britain and Europe.
Positive & Negative Game Tiles
The player can collect power-ups to help them gain
advantages, but the player can also land on negative tiles.
These power-ups are:
• Food Shortages
• Border Issues

Playtesting & Feedback
My first play tester said that he enjoyed the
random nature of the game and that it
ensures playability as the player won’t get
bored quickly.
He also enjoyed the slight comedic aspect to
the game. Another piece of feedback was
that the board game was laid out well and
easy to follow, that the player can learn it
without reading the rules.

My final play tester said that the
game was well thought out and
simple to understand. She said
that the game was enjoyable to
play, the only criticism is that it
would be nice to have more
variety with the tile options/rules.

he didn’t see many issues with
my board game, he offered
some constructive criticism
which was that depending on
the player’s roll, the game may
end too quickly.

6. New Tile
As apart of my snakes/ladder theme, I added a new tile that allows the
player to skip forward and also gives out perks. This tile is the B*%$@
to Brexit bus, which is a comedic aspect to the game in response to my
feedback.
Better Icons
In response to the feedback I received, I added more
colours and better icons to my board game.
Longer Board
In my playtesting, I learnt that my game was too quick, so
I extended the length of the board to try and counter that
issues.

My second play tester liked the
layout of the game and the
colours used; she did add some
constructive criticism, which
was to add more information
regarding the rules in the
legend. She also added that I
should number the tiles so that
the board game is more
cohesive.

My first play tester gave me some good
feedback regarding the game mechanics
and rules.
Another piece of constructive criticism was
that the Finishing tile (Britain and EU united)
doesn’t make sense from the perspective of
restarting the game (i.e. Not having enough
stars to end). He also recommended making
more rules and making the board longer,
with more tiles.

some of the above criticisms,
such as the rules need more
explanation and there are
elements of the game that is
multiplayer (it is currently a
single-player game). He
recommended adding fewer stars
but adding more tiles with
negative connotations.

8. Choose a Role
The player can now choose to be a Brexiteer or a
Remainer, this affects the points they get and which boss
they get.
Bosses & Mini Bosses
Bosses & Mini Bosses were added to make the game more
challenging.
• Boss (Theresa May or Jean Claude Junker) = Needs 6 Stars to
Defeat
• Mini Boss 1 (Protesters): DICE ROLL – need to land on a six.
• Mini Boss 2 (Rioting People): DICE ROLL – need to land on a one.

My first play tester didn’t have
many critiques, he said that I should
number the tiles and add more
illustrations and colour. He said that
he enjoyed the pace of the game
and didn’t find it too challenging. He
also mentioned that I should find a
way to have more strategy
elements.
Play Tester 1
My second play tester had a lot
of positives to say about my
game. Some of the positives he
mentioned was that he liked the
map, he liked the goal and he
enjoyed the boss/mini boss
element. He said there’s some
issues with the points system
and playability as a solo-player
game.

My third play tester suggested
that I make stars/points more
prominent, he gave an example
which is if you get a bomb, you
lose double points etc. He
suggested adding more strategy
and perks to the board game and
maybe adding some more mini-
bosses.

10. New Tile - Questions
In response to the feedback I got in the last playtesting session, I added a new
tile! It’s a questions tile, if the player lands on it they must answer the question
provided, or they will lose a star and have to restart the board game again (if they
don’t have enough points to beat the boss.
New Design
In my last playtesting session, I was told the board games
needs more colour, so I created an online version of the
game so I could have better icons and colours.
Longer Board (Extra 5 Tiles)
I decided to add more tiles onto my board game, as this
would allow more space for negative and positive tiles.

My final play tester said that she that she
enjoyed the mini-boss/boss element as it
makes it more challenging. She had a
couple critiques too, she suggested adding
more bosses and more question tiles. She
also raised the question of,” What happens
if the player loops around the board and
lands on the question tile for the second
time?”, which I feel is important to note.

more straight forward as I had

12. CONCLUSION
I learned that making a board game is more difficult than I expected and that playtesting is very
necessary as it allowed me to see flaws in the game that I wouldn’t have seen otherwise.
What Have I Learned?
If I were to do this project again, I would research more thoroughly at the start and not get set on one
idea. I would have brainstormed for longer at the start and come up with as many ideas as possible.
