Succession “Losers”: What Happens to Executives Passed Over for the CEO Job?
By David F. Larcker, Stephen A. Miles, and Brian Tayan
Stanford Closer Look Series
Overview:
Shareholders pay considerable attention to the choice of executive selected as the new CEO whenever a change in leadership takes place. However, without an inside look at the leading candidates to assume the CEO role, it is difficult for shareholders to tell whether the board has made the correct choice. In this Closer Look, we examine CEO succession events among the largest 100 companies over a ten-year period to determine what happens to the executives who were not selected (i.e., the “succession losers”) and how they perform relative to those who were selected (the “succession winners”).
We ask:
• Are the executives selected for the CEO role really better than those passed over?
• What are the implications for understanding the labor market for executive talent?
• Are differences in performance due to operating conditions or quality of available talent?
• Are boards better at identifying CEO talent than other research generally suggests?

User experience design is a practice of transforming user insights and emotion to create products and services that are useful, easy to use, and enjoyable. The process requires in-depth understanding of the customers and inter-disciplinary collaboration to ensure connected experiences across customer touch points.
In this talk, I will discuss various User Experience Design methods that are commonly used for product and service development. I will cover the pros and cons for the methods, and how they are often tweaked in practice to meet the contextual constraints in the industry.

2. BIO
Photography has been a constant throughout my life, and in 2004
I took a leap of faith and went back to study to make this my full time
passion.
My previous life and work experience has included a cross-section of
marketing and brand roles within media and events industries. I am also
currently studying a Masters of Marketing to further expand my depth of
knowledge in this area.
Having a marketing / brand background has proven invaluable to my
clients as I can offer constructive collaboration to develop creative briefs
to meet brand and marketing communication tactics, and then deliver
upon the creative concept.
I am more than a 'photographer-for-hire'...I am a creative partner adept
at understanding the high level view down to the detailed delivery. For
the majority of my commissions I have been art director, talent
coordinator and photographer!
Specialties:
Commercial | Portrait | Events | Creative Concept Development |
Brand and Marketing Communication Strategies
Equipment:
I have a wide range of high-end camera equipment, including studio
lighting. I have a studio space suitable for small to medium-scale work.
Clients:
WRG, Creative Action, Intercontinental, Grand Hyatt, Ritz Carlton,
Rumaillah Group, Hamad Medical Corporation, QPMC, Schlumberger,
Texas A&M, Carnegie Mellon, Compass International School, Doha Asian
Games, Icon Display…

4. Hamad Medical Corporation:
Aerial shoot to profile the LifeFlight Ambulance
rescue service. The brief was to capture
LifeFlight in action against Doha backdrops
and the shoot required helicopter-to-
helicopter logistics. Showing the movement of
the blades was a technical requirement.

5. Rumaillah Group:
I was commissioned directly to develop an image library to profile their
equipment hire; equipment servicing; blind manufacturing; warehousing;
and office fit-out divisions, along with casual management portraits. Profiling
the brand was a baseline requirement.

7. QPMC:
This image library project was commissioned through a creative agency to
document the shipping, processing and distribution of aggregate product.
The brief was to make bulldozers, sand and rock look interesting! 4am starts
were required to avoid the summer heat and humidity, and to catch the
best light. Locations were around southern Qatar.

9. Schlumberger:
The marketing department required images to promote the Qatar
partnership for underground water research, and the transfer of
knowledge. I was commissioned directly to travel with the staff to
numerous well locations throughout central Qatar to capture
creative images of the processes and working relationship.

11. Texas A&M:
I have worked with the university on several occasions
to create their image library for their range of labs and
processes, and to capture staff corporate portraits.
Shooting lasers was definitely a technical challenge
and one of the coolest things I’ve done…apart from
the helicopter shoot!

20. I love working with people of all ages. It’s a challenge at times – especially with children – but I
enjoy the art of making people look their best and bringing out personalities. I use both artificial
and natural lighting to suit the nature of my subjects and the style they are looking for. I have done
portrait work in both commercial and family categories.
