Victim identified
Kansas City police on Thursday identified the victim of a fatal wreck on Interstate 435 as Willie J. Battle Jr. of
Osawatomie, Kan.
Battle, 33, survived a wreck on I-435 at the Triangle but was subsequently struck by two vehicles as he tried to
cross the roadway.
Battle was southbound on I-435 and was attempting to take the curve to westbound I-435 about 4 a.m.
Wednesday when he lost control of his pickup truck. His pickup crashed into the concrete barrier. Battle
survived and walked as far as the center lane before two westbound vehicles struck him. He was pronounced

sold cars, a partner in the Heating & Cooling business, and excelled as a wonderful father, son, husband, and
unbelievable friend.

Brett was born on October 22, 1969 to Lorne and Carol Moats in Kansas City, Missouri. He attended school in
Lee’s Summit, Missouri. During his elementary years, he participated in basketball, Cub Scouts, and music by
playing the piano and organ for the Nazarene Church, the Lee’s Summit Methodist Church and area nursing
homes. His high school years found him active in Symphonic Band, The Sounds of Now and Then Choir, Men’s
Choir, Marching Band, Jazz Band and was on the Honor Roll graduating from Lee’s Summit High School in
1988. He attended University of Central Missouri (formerly Central Missouri State University) in Warrensburg,
Missouri. While attending there, he worked in the offices as an Office Coordinator, was a Student Ambassador,
a Teacher’s Assistant, a member of the Jazz Band, a cheerleader and also performed as Mo the Mule, the
school mascot. He graduated in 1992 having earned his Bachelor of Education. The following year he received
his Master of Science in Business Administration. He later received his Master of Psychology. After graduation,
Brett moved to Chicago working for several years at Arthur Anderson & CO, SC. as the Conduct Coordinator
before returning to The University of Central Missouri as the school’s Activity Manager. He moved to Dallas, TX
working for the Lennox Company where he met Maria Castañón.
Brett and Maria were married on December 29, 2004. In 2006, they welcomed Quinton Alan Moats to the family
and Alayna Shae Moats in 2010. As Maria’s career progressed, the family moved from TX to the NY area.
During the past 12 years, Brett dedicated his life to raising their children and applying his construction skills to
renovating their various homes.
Brett is preceded in death by his father, Lorne Moats. He is survived by his wife, Maria Castañón Moats; his two
children, Quinton Alan Moats and Alayna Shae Moats; his mother, Carol Moats; his sister, Valerie Sherley
(John Sherley); niece, Jessica Fisher; and nephews, John Sherley and Brian Sherley.

Two Lee’s Summit Men Killed in Car-Truck Crash
Two Lee’s Summit men were killed early today when their car collided head-on with a pickup truck in eastern
Kansas City.
The victims were identified as Joseph Draper, 21, and Ronald Thomas, 19. They were pronounced dead on
arrival at Truman Medical Center, said Sgt. John McEntee of the Kansas City Police Department’s accident
investigation unit.
The driver of the pickup, Harvey Heffner, 55, of eastern Kansas City, was in critical condition early today with
head injuries.
McEntee said the Lee’s Summit men were westbound on Bannister Road about a half-mile east of Noland
Road when Thomas lost control of the 1982 Toyota Celica on a curve at about 12:20 a.m.
The car skidded and swerved into the eastbound lane and was hit on the driver’s side by Heffner’s 1984
Chevrolet pickup.
All three men were wearing seat belts.

He was a member of the National Honor Society. He played baseball with the Boyle’s team of the Ban Johnson
League. Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Douglas D. Weddle, and a sister, Brenda S. Weddle, all of
the home, and his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Peters of Lee’s Summit.
