Windows 8 is a product that is initially both exhilarating and confusing. The Metro Style UI first experienced in Windows Phone 7 is at the forefront of Windows 8. It is fresh and inviting to the user while providing the information users need to keep up to date without drilling into applications.
On the other hand, we are all asking ourselves, “Where are my windows?” The truth is that Windows 8 and what was announced at the Microsoft BUILD conference the week of September 12 is intended to allow the Windows universe the ability to grow and innovate.
I attended the BUILD conference and many of the Windows 8 sessions regarding this exciting upcoming Windows release. In the first webinar in this four-part series, I will provide an overview of what was announced at the BUILD conference, present my insights and opinions on Windows 8 and demonstrate some of great features of Windows 8 that will allow people to understand the path upon which Microsoft is embarking.

Types of Software Development
Front-End Development
The portion of software development that the user may access the most is front-end development. That is to say, because it includes the graphical components of any system, application, or website, this kind of software development is instantly apparent to consumers.
Custom software development company oman use different tasks related to Front End Development include creating user interfaces (UIs) and controlling client-side behaviour. User interfaces (UIs) play a critical role in attracting end users to software.
Back-End Development
Development that takes place behind the scenes is referred to as back-end development. Alternatively put, you are unable to notice it.
This is due to the fact that back-end development includes server-side behaviour, which is related to the internal structures of the software application itself, such as servers, databases, and application programming interfaces (APIs).
Full Stack Development
Ultimately, the user interacting with the front-end decides how good the software product is. However, the back end ensures that nothing malfunctions during the procedure.
In essence, front-end and back-end developers collaborate to provide the best of both worlds.
Thus, the combination of client-side and server-side programming is defined as full stack development.
Application Development
Another broad category of software development is application development. You'll quickly learn that application development is the core of every software project, in addition to front-end, back-end, and full stack development.
Application development is, at its core, the process of developing a computer programmer, or programmer, to accomplish tasks in support of corporate goals.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Low/No Cost Software is it right for your business
1. Low/No Cost Software is it right for your Business Bill Maynard – TechCon Services www.techconsvc.com
2. Can Low/No cost software save my company money? Short answer Yes/No/Maybe There are numerous excellent software solutions out there for almost anything you can dream, or imagine, for little or no money. Many of these solutions have been created under an “open source” model. Open Source is where the developer has granted free distribution of a program and access to source code in an effort to further the software development.
3. Where do I get it? Many sites offer thousands of open source, shareware and freeware programs are sourceforge.net, osalt.com, majorgeeks.com, opensourceprograms.net, and tucows.com to name a few. Many of these solutions were created to solve a particular need or because a developer was not satisfied with existing commercial solutions Over time these programs have continued to be enhanced and have grown into excellent alternatives to commercial programs
4. Questions to ask before diving into the Low/No Cost software world? Q: How critical is the software functionality to your business? A: The more critical, the more in-depth your research on the software should be. Q: What is the source of the software? A: a single/small developer, an organization, a company providing an open source version? Software created by a single / small developer tends to have a greater risk associated with it, while companies providing an open source version tend to be more stable. Q: Is there documentation and does it make sense to you? A: If there is no documentation or help files then unless the application is very simple, you may have difficulty getting what you expect out of the product. Q: Is the software being continuously updated? A: Recent software updates and active forums are indications that the product development is continuing and that problems in the software may be resolved in the future
5. Trusted Sources Q: Does the software come from a trusted source? A: If you find that application you were looking for, make sure you try to locate a review from creditable source such as PCmag.com or cnet.com, and go check out the developer’s WEB site. If after doing these you don’t feel 100% comfortable with the source of the software then don’t install it. It could contain some form of malware (virus, spyware, etc.) which could compromise your computer and company’s data.
