This slide show is of recent hand dyed fabric that I have done. I layer the fabric with dyes, paint and the stain residual from metal. This process is one that takes several days to complete. What is represented here are scarves, shawls and jackets. They are silk chiffon - lightweight and great for wearing year round!

Batik is an art form that involves decorating cloth by applying wax in patterns and then dyeing the fabric. This process originated in Java, Indonesia and has been practiced for centuries. The wax resists the dye, allowing patterns and colors to appear on the cloth where the wax was not applied. In Java, intricate batik designs are created by repeatedly applying wax and dyeing the fabric different colors. The finished batik cloth is created when the hot wax is ironed out of the fabric, leaving behind an elaborate, multi-colored pattern.

This work is the output of one textile artist who has worked in many formats, some of which served as the foundation for patchwork quilt design classes taught since 2002 in the USA, Australia, France, England, Kenya, Canada, Kuwait and South Africa, as well as online for Quilt University and QuiltEd Online.
Throughout the works presented here are commonalities of style and presentation leading to a conclusive series of work called “Redefinitions.” This series falls back to the origins of fabric patchwork as it explores the use of freehand and controlled cutting and piecing coupled with accenting linear elements and dense quilting.
Amongst all pieces, two fabrics prevail - silk and cotton - sometimes augmented with synthetic “fancies.” Many fabrics were hand painted, dyed, stamped or stenciled by the artist. Most piecing and quilting was done by machine, although instances of decorative or functionally required hand work can be found. Most beading was done by hand.
Conceptual in theory, these works raise patchwork quilting to the level of fine art.

- 1. Louise Barker Timeless, original fabric inspired by nature.
- 2. Artist’s Statement My love for fabric began at an early age. I have been involved with surface design for over 30 years, working in all facets of it. I love seeing the unexpected results that happen when you cannot have complete control over a substance or process. Color and texture take on a whole new meaning in this evolvement. When I create, I try to allow my materials to speak for themselves. My sense of design is tactile, organic. My goal is to marry a balance of sophistication with a sense of nature. We describe ourselves by the choices of what we wear. I enjoy having my work be part of those choices. When you invest in the unique and beautiful, people take notice. It is a statement. It is self- expression. It is a treasure that you will always enjoy!
- 3. The Process Each piece of fabric is hand dyed with rust. The metal is placed on the fabric, which gives it a unique organic design that can never be duplicated. The fabric is then layered with resists, dyes or paints. This process gives the silk character and depth. These one of a kind pieces are a beautiful and sophisticated addition to any wardrobe.
