Lou Gehrig was a famous baseball player who played for the New York Yankees in the 1920s and 1930s. He was known for his strength, consistency, and work ethic. In 1939, at age 36, Gehrig was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a degenerative disease of the motor neurons. Despite this diagnosis, Gehrig continued to play baseball and called himself "the luckiest man on the face of the earth" for the life and career he had experienced up until that point.
