Superpower Your Apache Kafka Applications Development with Complementary Open...Paul Brebner
Kafka Summit talk (Bangalore, India, May 2, 2024, https://events.bizzabo.com/573863/agenda/session/1300469 )
Many Apache Kafka use cases take advantage of Kafka’s ability to integrate multiple heterogeneous systems for stream processing and real-time machine learning scenarios. But Kafka also exists in a rich ecosystem of related but complementary stream processing technologies and tools, particularly from the open-source community. In this talk, we’ll take you on a tour of a selection of complementary tools that can make Kafka even more powerful. We’ll focus on tools for stream processing and querying, streaming machine learning, stream visibility and observation, stream meta-data, stream visualisation, stream development including testing and the use of Generative AI and LLMs, and stream performance and scalability. By the end you will have a good idea of the types of Kafka “superhero” tools that exist, which are my favourites (and what superpowers they have), and how they combine to save your Kafka applications development universe from swamploads of data stagnation monsters!
Why Apache Kafka Clusters Are Like Galaxies (And Other Cosmic Kafka Quandarie...Paul Brebner
Closing talk for the Performance Engineering track at Community Over Code EU (Bratislava, Slovakia, June 5 2024) https://eu.communityovercode.org/sessions/2024/why-apache-kafka-clusters-are-like-galaxies-and-other-cosmic-kafka-quandaries-explored/ Instaclustr (now part of NetApp) manages 100s of Apache Kafka clusters of many different sizes, for a variety of use cases and customers. For the last 7 years I’ve been focused outwardly on exploring Kafka application development challenges, but recently I decided to look inward and see what I could discover about the performance, scalability and resource characteristics of the Kafka clusters themselves. Using a suite of Performance Engineering techniques, I will reveal some surprising discoveries about cosmic Kafka mysteries in our data centres, related to: cluster sizes and distribution (using Zipf’s Law), horizontal vs. vertical scalability, and predicting Kafka performance using metrics, modelling and regression techniques. These insights are relevant to Kafka developers and operators.

Lorgan IoT Behavioural Lake for Air Quality improvement
We have configured our platform for a global Bio Oxygen
manufacturing client to reduce the “sick building syndrome” by
optimally maintaining:
• CO2 within acceptable range of 700 - 1000 ppm
• Particulate Matter PM1, PM2.5 and PM10 reduction by 40%
PM1 & PM 2.5 are considered to be the most
dangerous in terms of Air Quality.
PM1 is 70 times finer than the thickness of a
human hair and enters the bloodstream.
PM2.5 harmful to lungs.
PM 10 particles are less dangerous.
Sick building Syndrome
• Irritation and itching eyes
• Nose and throat irritation
• Runny or congested nose
• Other flu-like symptoms
• Chest tightness
• Itchy skin occasionally with the
development of rash
• Headaches
• Poor concentration
• Irritability

Lorgan IoT Behavioural Lake for predictive maintenance of machinery
Imagine if you could …
Predict which Jet or Co-axial fan is
likely to fail in a busy tunnel
Our Enigma IoT Behaviour Lake is configured at two of our clients in just
under 24 hours enabling them with Machine learning based anomaly
detection, predictive maintenance scoring, as well as, self-service dash
boards, and exploration of data.
We have currently implemented this with two reputed global HVAC
manufacturers, and local tunnels maintenance clients to:
reduce 30% of time-based routine maintenance, and, reduce
50% of equipment downtime

Lorgan IoT Behavioural Lake for smart business electricity usage optimisation
Imagine if you could …
identify which appliances are
consuming too much energy
Discover how efficiently devices in homes operate (e.g., Water Heaters, Air
Conditioning, Lights, Fridges, TVs etc.,), and manage both Solar and Grid
production/consumption. Lorgan’s Behavioural Lake streams sensor
reading in near real-time, and predicts and prescribes necessary actions to
be taken; a) to reduce usage/cost, and, b) prevent potential failures.
We have currently configured our platform in 30 buildings (in SA) with a
target to reduce 20% of electricity costs

Lorgan IoT Behavioural Lake for Hospitality industry
Imagine if you could …
prevent theft of Linen &
reduce food wastage
Hospitality industry's challenges:
* lost assets * food wastage * lack of optimised usage of electricity, gas & water,
* preserving food for longer durations.
Lorgan is currently implementing its Behavioural Lake to address above issues.
For an Asian client, we are aiming at: a) reducing linen replacement costs from
$700K to $280K b) accurately predicting the amount of meat and vegetables
needed to be purchased, thereby reducing 2 tons of wastage per
month by at least 50% c) purify the air, and optimise electricity charges.

Lorgan IoT Behavioural Lake for natural disasters prediction and detection
Predicting natural disasters such as fire, earthquakes, floods etc., are infrequent and
stochastic;
Implementing Lorgan’s Enigma platform, in a matter of days, governments and
other natural disaster response organisations can now predict and detect natural
disasters fast and accurately.
Currently, we are at an advanced stage of discussions with one of the Asian
countries to implement our Behavioural Lake
to predict and detect natural disasters with high accuracy.
** We made our product compatible with Canadian Fire Weather Index (FWI)
standards.

Lorgan Enigma Behavioural Lake - Healthcare disease prediction
Imagine if you could …
predict diseases such as:
• Cancer,
• Sepsis, and
• Heart disease
Implement Lorgan’s Behavioural Lake to predict potential risks associated with
high risk diseases such as Cancer, Sepsis, and Heart Diseases to name a few.
Also, the same Behavioural Lake can be used to optimise the performance of
individual medical centre, patient behavioural pattern analysis, minimising no-show
appointments etc.,
We have conducted internal Pilots for
Breast Cancer risk exposure, and
Sepsis risk exposure (using MIMIC data supplied by MIT Lab)

20. 3D Point Cloud dangerous objects detection with accurate distances
20
3D point clouds can be generated from images using Light Detection And Ranging
(LiDAR).
Objects described by point clouds can be as small as a few millimetres, or as large as
whole cities, including vegetation, plantation, buildings, roads and cars.
Using Lorgan’s point cloud processing, one can identify the exact distances between
objects even to the level of a few centimetres.
Enigma Behavioural Lake
• Processes vast 3D Point Cloud data in excess of multiple billions
of 3D Coordinates
• Classifies various objects on the ground
• Generates prescriptions with exact distance of various dangerous
objects that are surrounded to the conductors / assets such as
power lines, poles, towers etc.,

21. Suspect analysis using Lorgan’s Behaviour Lake & BeyondEyes
21
We are currently in discussions with multiple enforcement and security
departments in; a) one of the Asian countries b) a European country, and c)
multiple countries in the South American region.
For the Asian client, the CDR / XDR data from all the Telcos in the country will
be ingested into Lorgan’s Behavioural Lake and analysed for suspicious call
patterns. From this cluster, the relevant officials filter and use our BeyondEyes
product for interrogations.
