1. Long Work Hours
If you work long hours, then you know what we mean when we talk about coming home and
decompressing. After such a long day of hard work, you
must come home and decompress your energy, vegetate on
the couch for a little bit, and really soothe your nerves. Of
course, that is not always possible.
If you have a stressful home life, if you have an angry
spouse, if you have children AT ALL, then the possibility of
distressing at home can seem very small to not existing at
all. Naturally, you must do something to help you unwind
every day, and this is where bad habits are started.
Sometimes, people go to the bar afterward. Sometimes,
people stay in the office and abusing drugs or alcohol while
they wind down. Sometimes, they just want the substance
abuse and nothing else.
The trick is to find out what your spouse and children need during the day so that they are not
barraging you with questions, problems or needs right as you get home. There must be a serious
conversation with the whole family where you outline what you need at the end of the workday,
telling them approximately how long it takes for you to unwind and asking them not to pile very
much on you until that time has passed. By speaking clearly and concisely (and lovingly) about
your own decompressing needs, your whole family will be able to grasp how important it is to be
kind and open hearted with you right after you get home.
In this manner, those destructive habits are not built and they are not strengthened by prolonged
periods away from home, where you dread returning more and more and your spouse gets more
and more upset with you.
