Fallacies are an error in reasoning.
There are many different types of fallacies and since most people have either not taken an
introductory logic or critical thinking course they occur frequently and regularly. Your
assignment is to find examples of fallacies in the media. They may consist of almost any
type of media, print or otherwise. Commercials are a good way to find fallacies. So are
magazines with lots of advertising. The Union Tribune has an insight section on Sunday
and the Our Region section of the paper Monday through Saturday, as well as an opinion
page and a letters to the editor page.
All of the above are excellent ways to find fallacies.

Fallacies are an error in reasoning. There are many different types of fallacies and since

occur frequently and regularly. Your assignment is to find examples of fallacies in the

Monday through Saturday, as well as an opinion page and a letters to the editor page. All
of the above are excellent ways to find fallacies.
Your project consists of the following requirements:
1) There must be between ten and fifteen examples of fallacies.
2) Each example must contain the following information as appropriate.
a) Date and time you located the fallacy for visual media, auditory media, email or
conversation
b) If from a printed source give the Newspaper name, Magazine title etc.
3) You cannot use more than two examples of the same fallacy.
4) Each example must explain what the specific type of fallacy is that is violated, and
how this particular example is a fallacy.
5) Put each example on a separate piece of paper. Put these 10 or 15 pieces of paper in a
manila envelope with your name on it. Please make sure that the folder is secure. (I
would put my name and the class number on each sheet of paper and the envelope also.)
This must be turned in at the beginning of class on Wednesday December 10. It can be
turned in late for a complete reduction in grade. For example an 'A' becomes a 'B.' It may
also be turned in early with no reduction in grade.
Please note that this is worth 100 points or 17% of your grade, so please don't blow it off
to the last minute.

Ashford 5: Week 4 Instructor Guidance News Coverage Galore! In Week 4, you’ll continue to amass advice on refining your reporting skills. Do the assigned reading, and you’ll see that obituaries, news releases, and the basic news stories all rely on one thing—sound news judgment! The Deal on the Obituary Piece One of my jobs at ABC News was slightly peculiar. I’m glad you’re sitting down! I wrote obituary summaries, called obits, in 2005. The catch? They were for people who were still alive! The purpose was to provide onepage life summaries for famous people. In the event of an unexpected death, the network would have ready access to the most important facts about the person’s life; the media organization would not be caught off guard and could break/report the news using the obit information right away. I recall writing obits for the likes of Michael Jackson, Hillary Clinton, Ted Kennedy, and the former President of Pakistan. Unfortunately, you can see that the need for even obituary summaries for the living is real. What is the overarching point here? An obituary is about the person’s life! It should offer a rundown of what the person accomplished while alive, preferably in the order of chronology or significance. Details such as the manner of death or scandals are not essential and should be handled with caution. Make sure you are familiar with your organization’s policy on obituaries, because what reporters are expected to omit or include can vary throughout the media. Can you see why obituaries are ideal for the inverted pyramid structure? Also, I strongly advise you to triplecheck the spelling of the person’s name. This is one simple instance where more than your credibility will be at stake in the event of inaccuracy. News Releases: Love them or Hate Them? Personally, I have grown to love them! And trust me, you will too, especially on exceptionally slow news days. You just have to be able to read between the lines. Like News Reporting & Writing says, the news releases that journalists are provided with are usually very selfserving. Thinking of them as press releases will help you to avoid falling for the trap of reporting the release as a means of free publicity. Knowing what the sender hopes to gain from the media coverage that they are eliciting is important. The news releases I appreciate most are those centered on announcements or causes. They are your news plug for timeliness and relevance! The trick now is to take the plug and utilize it to turnover a report that advances an underlying story. For example, I once got a news release from a local nonprofit announcing the coming of World Aids Day in December and detailing the rally planned. Reporting this alone would have qualified as a story by some accounts, but journalists must take it a step further. In just the first month of our COM 107 class this Spring, a number of major events are scheduled to take place: the Grammy awards, Iowa caucuses, New Hampshire primaries, and the 50th Super Bowl. These are opportunities we ought not ignore. We can use them to examine how new and old media — legacy, digital, and social — shape a single event differently. 4 Your assignment is to select ONE of these four events and examine how various media outlets cover it the day after. You will need to plan ahead and start thinking about your paper assignment now so that you can pay attention to media coverage leading up to the event, as the lead-up will likely inform the introductory paragraph of your paper. On the day of your event you should plan to watch the television coverage and follow social media buzz during it. This will inform your analysis. Then you should monitor the coverage of, and information flow about, that event as it appears in a variety of media and platforms, on the day after. Clearly you cannot monitor everything in all media being published and broadcast, even about a single event. So to simplify your analysis, you should choose one outlet from each of the following five types:  a general interest (legacy) news source such as The New York Times, CNN, Wall Street Journal, or NPR  an industry specific news source such as Sports Illustrated for the Super Bowl, Politico for politics, or Entertainment Tonight for the Grammys  an industry owned source such as the Twitter feed of the NFL, Grammys, or Republican National Convention  an international news source (anything produced outside the US)  a niche media outlet that is created for and by a marginalized group (LGBTQ, Hispanic, Black, women’s media) Your sample MUST include examples of all five types listed above so that you can compare and contrast how different media outlets, with different audiences and missions, frame stories differently. Again, you should plan ahead by selecting your media outlets even before your event happens. For example, if you choose the Iowa caucuses, you might choose to monitor New York Times coverage; Politico coverage; the RNC’s website, the Guardian, and theroot.com. Or you might choose, instead, the coverage on the Chicago Tribune’s website, politifact.com, the DNC’s Twitter feed, Le Monde, and latinomagazine.com. If you are covering the Grammys you might choose the LA Times, Variety, @theGRAMMYs on Twitter, the BBC, msmagazine.com. That should provide you with a diversified sample of media content about which to make some judgments. If you have any question about the sample of media you have chosen, see us and clear the sample. Once you have all your data in front of you, analyze it. Think about it. Figure out what lessons you can learn from it. In writing the paper, below are examples of the kinds of questions you might choose to answer. These are not exclusive.

Explanation: Throughout the first half of HIST 2010, we’ve covered a number of factors that have shaped the development of the United States from a collection of British Colonies into an independent and united political entity. The factors at work in this process can be grouped into two general categories: those driven by ideology (religion, political and other types of philosophical beliefs) and those driven by material concerns (land acquisition, the desire to accumulate wealth, etc). While there is no doubt that both types of factors were important in these years, do you find ideology or material concerns to be the most important? Pick one or the other and argue for that position. Make sure to use plenty of evidence from the course readings. Assignment Overview : You must back up your argument/thesis with plenty of evidence that supports your position. The purpose of this assignment is to show that you know and understand the material we’ve covered in this course, so you should include evidence from several readings and use only the materials assigned for HIST 2010 (ie no outside sources). In other words, you should do well to demonstrate that you know the material in this course. Anyone can give an opinion based on how they feel , but you are scholars, so what I expect is that you take an informed position that is based on what you can prove with evidence . If you choose to turn in a paper with few sources to back up your thesis, then you choose to receive a poor grade on this paper. Papers that draw only a single source will receive a maximum grade of a D. In order to receive full credit for this assignment, you must turn in both of the following to the dropbox on D2L. -A typed copy of your paper -An audio copy of you reading your paper ***- Your assignment will not be considered fully submitted until you have turned in both of these. Required Guidelines: (You can use this as a check list before you turn in your paper) -Your paper must have a title page that includes your name, course, and section number, and the semester. This page does not count toward the limit. Your paper should begin on the first line of the page that follows your title page. -The paper must be in 12 point Times New Roman font with 1.25” margins at left and right and 1” margins at top an bottom. It must be double-spaced. Failing to meet these requirements will lead to a deduction in your grade. -You may only use sources assigned for this course. Though there are many great sources out there, an important part of this assignment is showing me that you’ve read the materials I’ve assigned and understand them well enough to use them in your paper. -If you plagiarize on this paper, you will be given a failing grade for the course and you will.

HIS 101 Research Paper Assignment Assignment Your research paper for this class will be based on a historical figure of your choice. You may pick any person who falls within the scope of the course-that means it must be a figure from the Western world (Europe or the Middle East) who lived between the beginning of recorded history and the mid-18th century. This gives you a wide variety of people to pick from, so pick someone who interests you. (Hint: later people are easier to find sources for) The purpose of this assignment is not only for you to learn about a historical figure and time period in a more in-depth fashion than we will be able to do in class, but also for you to improve your writing skills, research skills, and ability to analyze information and create an argument. While this paper is based on a person, it should NOT be solely the story of their life from birth to death, but should make an argument that focuses on the historical events that affected their lives, and the events that they affected. The purpose of a research paper is to do research on a topic in order to gather evidence which you will use to support the argument that you are making. Think about this like you would a science experiment. Your argument, or thesis, is yours, but you need evidence to convince the reader that your argument is true, and that evidence comes from your sources. For example, if you chose Nicolo Machiavelli as your topic, you should spend very little time talking about his early life and career, and more discussing his entry into politics, the changes in his political opinions, how and why he wrote his great work The Prince, and how it affected politics both in his native Italy and across Europe, both in his time and to the present. You should choose something about Machiavelli’s career that you feel you can make an argument about, find evidence that supports that argument, then present it in a concise, well-organized essay. In order to do this, finding good sources is very important! Grading Your final paper will be graded on four major criteria: Thesis: This is the argument of your paper. Does the paper have a strong thesis statement at the beginning? Is the argument addressed throughout the paper? Does the conclusion appropriately address the thesis? Content: Does the paper contain good information? Does it contain all the major events of its’ subject’s life, and does it place these events in the appropriate historical context? Does it demonstrate a clear understanding of the subject’s historical importance? Are the sources used good sources, and are they used well? 2. Philosophy 130 1 OUT OF CLASS PROJECT FALLACY GATHERING Fallacies are an error in reasoning. Your project consists of the following requirements: 1) There must be between ten and fifteen examples of fallacies. 2) Each example must contain the following information as appropriate. a) Date and time you located the fallacy for visual media, auditory media, email or conversation b) If from a printed source give the Newspaper name, Magazine title etc. 3) You cannot use more than two examples of the same fallacy. 4) Each example must explain what the specific type of fallacy is that is violated, and how this particular example is a fallacy. 5) Put each example on a separate piece of paper. Put these 10 or 15 pieces of paper in a manila envelope with your name on it. Please make sure that the folder is secure. (I would put my name and the class number on each sheet of paper and the envelope also.) This must be turned in at the beginning of class on Wednesday December 10. It can be turned in late for a complete reduction in grade. For example an 'A' becomes a 'B.' It may also be turned in early with no reduction in grade. Please note that this is worth 100 points or 17% of your grade, so please don't blow it off to the last minute.
