Vision: To ensure equity professional development shall address opportunities for all stakeholders of the school
community to establish partnerships and bridge collaboratively to meet the need of each individual student.
Situation: Currently the focus on academic content is narrow and does not consider the human side of the student
experience. The primary focus is to meet education code (common core, etc). The approach is mechanical (like a
cookie cutter); the cookie-cutter approach does not address the social and emotional needs of all students. PD is
based on meeting the needs of high achievers rather than diverse levels of student achievement.
Priority: PD addressing the importance of equity and allowing for input from stakeholders.
Assumptions: The right PD will address the lack of human sensitivity. Thinking outside of the box (cookie-cutter
approach is inside the box thinking) means we will not only do what we are told; the law/mandate does not equal
building relationships. Teachers will be happier, more cooperative, and more willing to serve others if PD includes
input from those affected by the PD. The right PD will move staff beyond equality to equity.
