Session One: 'Setting Expectations: a DEIA Primer,' was held June 6, 2024.A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

- 4. Ramadan Ramadan is in the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. We believe the Qur’an was revealed in this month. Discuss it! Do you know the names of any other holy books? The Qur’an is the important holy book for us.
- 5. What do Muslims Do during Ramadan? We try to give up bad habits. We pray and read the Qur’an. Discuss it! Do you have any bad habits which you would like to give up? Do you think it would be easy or difficult? Why? We fast from sunrise to sunset.
- 6. Fasting Fasting is one of the most important things that happens in Ramadan. Fasting means that Muslims do not eat or drink from sunrise to sunset. Discuss it! Use a clock to show the time of sunrise and sunset at this time of year. How many hours of daylight are there? Do you think it would be difficult to fast for these hours? Which times of day would be hardest? Young children and very old people do not have to fast.
- 7. Iftar At the end of the day, after sunset, families all eat together. This special meal is called ‘aftaar’. Discuss it! When do you have a special meal with your family? What makes it special? - 8. Eid al-Fitr Eid al-Fitr is the festival at the end of Ramadan. It celebrates the end of the 29 or 30 days of fasting.
- 9. How Do Muslims Celebrate Eid al- Fitr? There are special services in the mosque. We dress in our best clothes. We have a special meal with our family.
- 10. What have you found out about Ramadan? Share it! Tell your talking partner something you can remember about Ramadan. Share your ideas with the class.
