The document discusses how the L.L. Bean hunting boot changed the world socially, economically, and politically through its popularity and the company's focus on excellent customer service since 1912. The boot and company became so influential that other brands tried to copy L.L. Bean's style and customer-centric philosophy, cementing its impact on the footwear industry and approach to business.

This seminar also takes a look at how social media sights like Facebook and Twitter have increased the attention to copyright rules and regulations and the possibility of copyright infringement of mete rials used on the web.
Caching Search Engine Results over Incremental IndicesRoi Blanco
A Web search engine must update its index periodically to incorporate changes to the Web. We argue in this paper that index updates fundamentally impact the design of search engine result caches, a performance-critical component of modern search engines. Index updates lead to the problem of cache invalidation: invalidating cached entries of queries whose results have changed. Naive approaches, such as flushing the entire cache upon every index update, lead to poor performance and in fact, render caching futile when the frequency of updates is high. Solving the invalidation problem efficiently corresponds to predicting accurately which queries will produce different results if re-evaluated, given the actual changes to the index.
To obtain this property, we propose a framework for developing invalidation predictors and define metrics to evaluate invalidation schemes. We describe concrete predictors using this framework and compare them against a baseline that uses a cache invalidation scheme based on time-to-live (TTL). Evaluation over Wikipedia documents using a query log from the Yahoo! search engine shows that selective invalidation of cached search results can lower the number of unnecessary query evaluations by as much as 30% compared to a baseline scheme, while returning results of similar freshness. In general, our predictors enable fewer unnecessary invalidations and fewer stale results compared to a TTL-only scheme for similar freshness of results.

Forest-poverty-commodity links in the Congo Basin: A value chain perspectiveVerina Ingram
1) The document discusses forest-poverty-commodity links in the Congo Basin, focusing on non-timber forest products (NTFPs) value chains and their significance for livelihoods.
2) Fieldwork was conducted from 2007-2010 in Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of Congo on 9 NTFP chains involving interviews with over 4,300 actors.
3) The research found that NTFPs make meaningful economic contributions to actors' livelihoods, especially for women and rural communities, but that overexploitation and lack of sustainable practices threaten the long-term viability of these resources and livelihoods.
A fine mess: Bricolaged forest governance in CameroonVerina Ingram
This document summarizes a study on forest governance in Cameroon. It finds:
1) Forest product value chains operate in dynamic settings with overlapping formal and informal institutions, referred to as "institutional bricolage."
2) Different governance arrangements, from statutory regulations to customary rules to project standards, influence the various non-timber forest product chains. Governance is weakest for gum arabic and bamboo chains.
3) Actors in the chains adapt to this complex environment by creatively shaping new governance arrangements or modifying existing ones to meet livelihood needs, in a process called "productive bricolage."
The document provides advice on earnings, spending, savings, risk, investment, and expectations. This document discusses different technologies for knowledge management processes including intermediation, externalization, internalization, and cognition.
Intermediation technologies like intranets, wikis, and video conferencing link knowledge to people. Externalization technologies extract knowledge from producers and store it in repositories using classification systems. Internalization technologies extract knowledge from repositories for consumers using search engines and information retrieval. Cognition technologies apply knowledge in organizational activities using tools like data mining, process mining, and simulation.
The document compares Xcode 3 and Xcode 4 to the JetBrains AppCode IDE, noting that Xcode 3 was unstable, lacked version control and unit test integration, and had poor refactoring. It then lists AppCode's features like smart code assistance, navigation, live analysis, Xcode support, refactoring tools, version control and issue tracker integration, unit testing, customizability, and plugins. It concludes by providing information on pricing AppCode at $99 for personal use or free for open source projects.

This document lists 10 reasons why you should not use a free blog service. It notes that free blog domains like .blogspot.com and .wordpress.com can negatively impact website authority, force ads, offer limited customization, plug-in support, and control over ads. Free blogs also risk being closed down or made paid, look unprofessional, may not allow selling or transferring the blog, or signing up for ad networks due to the domain name. The document recommends taking blogging seriously by not using a free service.
This document summarizes a research paper that examines trends in working capital management and its impact on the performance of small manufacturing firms in Mauritius. It discusses how working capital management is important for business liquidity and profitability. The paper aims to analyze the relationship between working capital metrics like inventory days, receivables days, payables days, and cash conversion cycle on the profitability of 58 small manufacturing firms in Mauritius from 1998-2003. Specifically, it finds that higher investment in inventory and receivables is associated with lower profitability.

Knowledge management requires investing in organizational culture, leadership, and tools to facilitate knowledge sharing. It allows organizations to be more competitive by accelerating innovation, reducing costs, and improving customer satisfaction. While challenging to implement due to issues like knowledge ownership, appropriate incentives and an open culture can overcome obstacles to create communities where knowledge is shared within and between organizations. Wikis are one tool that can help by allowing easy creation and editing of interlinked web pages.

It all started with a man and his fishing rod. In 1911, Lean Leonwood Bean, an avid hunter and fisherman, went on a fishing trip in Maine, noticed how much his feet got wet. Went home and made the best boots that were ever known to mankind. Genius by making them with flexible rubber soles and leather tops; the 1 st boot or shoe made with waterproof fabrics. Simply genius.
They started off looking about like this, just a tad shorter. The first pair of boots were sold for $3.50. Bean began making the shoe for friends and selling them through the mail to holders of Maine hunting licenses. The Maine hunting shoe became the basis of a thriving mail order business, which eventually expanded to include outdoor clothing, camping gear, and hunting and fishing supplies. But before L.L. Bean’s genius idea became completely famous, the 1 st shipment of 100 boots had leaked. When the customers shipped them back, they received a full refund with repair by L.L. Ben himself. From there, he was one of the first few businessmen to become national known for their top quality customer service reputation.
Here is an original letter from L.L. Bean himself to a customer whom he had failed with their first pair of boots. He says in the first sentence to the right, “ Outside of your gun, nothing is more important to your outfit as your footwear”. Am I right, ladies?
Although an excellent, knowledgeable businessman, little did Mr. Bean know that his rapidly growing company would become, not only a giant billion dollar retailing company, but his shoe design would go on to inspire thousands of others in the fashion businesses.
The L.L. Bean Hunting Boot would go on to effect the world socially and culturally, and economically in the world of fashion, even embraced politically…sort of… All though many presidents leisurely wore them including President Clinton & Bush 1 st & 2nd, they were known for a better role.
The Maine Hunting Boot later known as names such as “the duck boot”, “the Bean boot”, or “THE Boot” became not just a needed accessory for outdoorsmen & women. When most businesses were struggling during WWII, L.L. Bean was doing well with the military using his very own boot design. From then on, the business was open 24/7. And L.L. never missed an opportunity to improve service. While the bulk of sales were generated by the catalog, hunters and visitors frequently dropped by Freeport. A night bell allowed the late-night visitor to call a watchman or even L.L. himself. In 1951, L.L. opened the store 365 days a year, 24 hours a day proclaiming, "We have thrown away the keys to the place." To this day, there are no locks on the doors of the flagship store in Freeport.
L.L. Bean was known for having business quotes: In a 1927 catalog he wrote about the experiment of the boots themselves saying, "It is no longer necessary for you to experiment with dozens of flies to determine the few that will catch fish. We have done that experimenting for you."
L.L. Bean’s grandson, Leon Gorman, took over in 1967 after L.L. Bean passed. In 2001, Leon stepped down and for the first time in the business, let a non family member , Christopher McCormick take over. The boot business has continued to thrive through the internet, interactive catalogs,
Other companies tried to follow in Bean’s genius footsteps. Today’s competitors such as American Eagle, Eddie Bauer, Land’s End, and Bass Pro Shop have tried to fill Bean’s shoes. Have done well, but Bean still came out on top. L.L.Bean was announced a champion leaving some of big names like Apple, Lexus, Amazon, Starbucks, Dell, and others behind.
Now forget all your fancy Uggs and Jimmy Choos and see who came first!
Today, the L.L. Bean fashion is sometimes referred to in a joking way. In the movie Beetlejuice, character Otho sarcastically says, "Deliver me from L.L. Bean", when first looking upon the office in the Maitland's house. It was decorated in a fashion consistent with L.L. Bean's catalogs. The style is commonly referred to as “preppy” and suggested to the middle to upper middle class.
Notice the style of some shoes today, such as those Timbalands, and ladies just look at those high heels!
This boot is a resemblance of the original Bean boot that started it all.
In 1967, Leon Leonwood Bean passed away at the age of 94. Because of his wet feet and a small idea, this man would go on to change the world socially, culturally, economically, and yes even politically with a pair of boots. Just one man and his fishing rod. Thank you =)
