The document summarizes the infamous Lizzie Borden case from 1892. On August 4, 1892 in Fall River, Massachusetts, Lizzie Borden's father Andrew and stepmother Abby were found hacked to death with an ax inside their home. Lizzie and the maid Bridget were the only two people in the house at the time. All evidence pointed to Lizzie as the killer, as she was the only one who had opportunity and motive. She was tried and acquitted, but widespread suspicions of her guilt remained due to the circumstantial evidence against her.

In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.
2.
Victims:
◦ Andrew Borden: Lizzie’s father
◦ Abby Borden: Lizzie’s stepmother
What Happened?
◦ “Lizzie Borden took an ax and gave her mother 40
whacks. Once she saw what she had done, she gave her
father 41”
◦ On August 4, 1892 there were only two people in the
house, Lizzie Borden and Bridget Sullivan, the maid.
They found Andrew Borden hacked about 10 times on
the sofa. Soon after, they found the body of Abby Borden
on the second floor hacked about 20 times. Abby was
discovered to have died about an hour before Andrew.
All suspicions turned to Lizzie.
3.
Suspects?
◦ Lizzie Borden
◦ Bridget Sullivan
Lizzie’s Arrest
◦ Lizzie was suspected as the killer because she was
the only one who had the time and opportunity to
kill them. It was also discovered that she tried to
buy a deadly poison only days before, but was
rejected. She was arrested because there was
enough evidence to prove that it was her.
4.
Evidence?
◦ A day before the murders, Lizzie told a friend that she
thinks the family may be poisoned. A
man, Bence, testified that on August 3, Lizzie tried to
buy prussic acid, a deadly poison.
◦ Bridget stated that Lizzie was wearing a blue dress that
day of the murder. A friend testified that she saw Lizzie
burning a blue dress in a fire. When asked what
happened, she said that it was stained with old paint.
◦ Lizzie said that during the murders, she was in the barn.
The barn was revealed to have no footprints, and it was
too hot for anyone to want to stay in there willingly.
5.
After the trial
◦ Lizzie is put in jail because there is no evidence that
she did not commit the murders.
6.
My thoughts about the verdict
◦ I think that Lizzie Borden should have had a more
serious punishment for killing her parents with a
hatchet. If they had that much evidence, and no
other suspects, why wouldn’t they arrest the only
one they had.
