Literature Circle Assignment
A. When I was younger I took part in multiple literature circles. I cannot remember exactly
how each of them worked but, I relearned a lot of the basics through this assignment. I
learned the types of jobs that help promote a good discussion. I also learned the value of
having your students be apart of something like this (those reasons are listed in section
B). I learned that it is best to give children an option of what books they read so that they
are more engaged and excited. Lastly, I learned that it holds children more accountable
because they do not want to be embarrassed or let down their group. Since they have a
role, they must complete their part. Whereas, in a big class discussion, if they did not
finish the assigned reading they do not have to raise their hand or talk at all.
B. I really enjoy literature circles. There are a lot of positives that come out of them. For
starters, it is good to be responsible for certain information. Each week that you have a
new role you begin to focus on different areas of the book. This allows you to dissect a
lot of parts you normally do not look at. Also, the fact that you are responsible for the
information you read ensures that you actually thoroughly read each section. Normally
when I read I get distracted and miss sections. When that happens I do not re-read or care
that I missed something. In this situation, I made sure that I understood everything and
that I read it well. Another thing that I like about literature circles is that you get to hear
different point of views. Some people in my group interpreted the information differently
than others. This allows you to think about different situations and all the possible
outcomes, rather than just your one idea. Also, if you did miss something significant or
did not understand a section you can ask your peers and get a lot of your questions
answered. I honestly do not see any disadvantages to literature circles. They allow you to
hear different opinions on the topic, hold you accountable for your work, work on
discussion skills, and help you reflect on what you have read. Lastly, it is also worthwhile
because it is a good change for the students. It can get boring and repetitive for teachers
to lecture to their students daily. Student on student discussion is a new environment for
them that they may have more fun with.
C. I would really like to work this into my classroom in the future. I intend to give the class
different book options, like we were given, so they are interested in what they are
reading. I will also assign weekly/daily roles that change so they can focus on different
ideas each time. I will also make sure each student is a director at least once so each child
gains discussion skills. I will not give any form of test over the information but, I will
think of an engaging activity that allows me to see if everyone did their part in the
discussion. I really liked the idea of the group creating an alternate ending or something
of that sort.
