Si Huli is a crab who lives as a scavenger in the town of Dimatanto. She was raised by her aunt Francisca, who is actually her biological mother. Francisca hid this from Huli's father, Tandang Selo, as Francisca had gotten pregnant without being married.

2. Si Huli ay isang pipi at nammumuhay bilang isang
basurera sa bayan ng Dimatanto. Lumaki siya sa
piling ng kanyang kinilalang tiyahin na si Francisca na
isang modista. Sa katunayan, si Francisca ang tunay
na ina ni Huli. Inilihim hiya ito sa kagustuhan ng
kanyang ama na si Tandang Selo. Nabuntis ng
walang kinilalang ama ng kanyang sanggol si

4. The Execution

It was raining the morning of the execution. I remember
how brackish and crimson was the sky. God had sliced
open the sun, spilling its innards, carving out its heart. That
sun had never seemed the same to me ever since. The
cold air scraped the insides of my lungs and chilled my
nape. It was the first dawn I had awakened to. The first
time to witness the pained violent birthing of light.
