2. “We are in the business
of saving lives.”
Chris Hanson-Abbott OBE,
Chairman and founder of Brigade Electronics.
Driving Global Safety
Chris Hanson-Abbott formed Brigade Electronics in 1976, inspired by the strange
beeping sound he heard emanating from the rear of a small truck on a street in Tokyo.
At the time reversing safety had not been addressed outside of Japan, but with the
Health & Safety at Work Act recently passed into UK law and vehicles already
accounting for a vast number of fatalities, Chris felt it time for change.
With support from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT),
Brigade launched its first reversing alarm at the 1976 Commercial Vehicle show
in London. The reaction was mixed. The press was curious, but the vehicle
manufacturers and fleet owners were less enamoured, and the show ended
without a single sale. To add insult to injury the publicity culminated in the
Department for Transport announcing that reversing alarms contravened the
Construction & Use Regulations – and were thus illegal.
Undeterred, Chris continued his quest for safer roads and worksites. He
challenged the mind set of potential customers and lobbied the Government
tirelessly to change regulations until eventually his drive and belief saw
his vision start to be taken seriously. It took a further two years before
Brigade’s first alarm sale, to a prestigious UK bus company, and many
more years for health and safety culture to be fully addressed. Nowadays,
vehicle safety systems are universally accepted as a necessity for plant and
commercial vehicles and this progress has undoubtedly played an
important part in saving many lives.
The experience and knowledge gained since those early days has enabled
Brigade to fully understand the industry and the problems customers face.
Brigade was, and still is, at the forefront of the industry, whether this be pioneering
new products or opening and educating new markets around the world. The initial
vision remains; to make roads and worksites safer for all.
Chris was recognised in the 2014 Queen’s Birthday Honours list
and awarded an OBE for services to Vehicle Road Safety.

Pioneering Product
Pushing Legislation
Brigade has been pioneering the cause of reversing safety
since 1976, when we introduced the very first reversing
alarm to Europe. We continue to lead the way in vehicle and
plant safety, having extended our range to include all-round
visibility, pioneering many products and developing and
patenting new technology.
The Brigade group now employs almost a hundred people
worldwide and turns over in excess of £19 million. With
a strong network of specialist distributors, established
subsidiaries and partnerships worldwide, we are viewed as a
market leader in vehicle safety.
Our wealth of experience has earned us a reputation for
expertise. We act as an industry voice and are often called
upon in an advisory capacity to sit on both legislative and
international committees.
We understand your industry and the problems you face.

Brigade’s range of leading edge safety systems assist both driver and cyclist. Side sensors detect obstacles
alongside the vehicle giving an audible signal to the driver, whist an external speaking alarm warns cyclists
and pedestrians of the vehicle’s intended left turn. Combined with a camera monitor system including side
view camera, vision and awareness in the near side blind spot are greatly improved.
Killing blind spots. Saving lives.

Brigade launches the National Reversing Safety Campaign, for the
mandatory fitment of reversing alarms on all commercial vehicles.
The campaign, although unsuccessful in its goal, raises the
awareness of reversing safety and gains support from the Transport
& General Workers Union, MPs, various local councils and the
Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA).
A briefing paper entitled
‘Reversing Vehicles in
Safety’ published for FTA
members, identifies the
fitment of reversing alarms
as a way of reducing risk
from reversing vehicles.

Doctor Will Murray
from the University of

published ‘Reversing

Vehicle Safety Solutions
Brigade understands the many and complex safety issues
of mobile applications, resulting in a flexible product range
offering safety solutions for vehicles and plant. Whether you
are operating on- or off-road, vehicle or machine, large or
small, we can help.
We strongly believe in a complementary range of passive and
active systems to warn and assist the driver whilst protecting
workers, pedestrians and cyclists. Not only this, our systems
help increase efficiency and decrease vehicle downtime,
saving operators thousands of pounds.
In terms of saving lives we believe the status quo is never
enough. We are constantly researching the latest and
developing technologies to see how they can be used to
improve safety for different mobile applications.
Many of our product ranges were initially introduced to the
UK, Europe and even the world by Brigade. Several of our
products are patented and unique to us.
Accept no imitations.
?Our current range of vehicle safety
systems are of a consistently high
standard, however, we haven’t
become complacent about our
product portfolio and are always
researching new technology to aid
all-round visibility and safety.

Safe and Secure
Brigade understands that without quality, reliable products
we would not be the company we are today, which is why we
go the extra mile to make sure safety is not compromised.
Products are only released once we are confident they are
fit for purpose. It would be easy to forget this with the lure of
new technologies, but this is not the Brigade way. Whatever
the product or technology, it has to pass rigorous and
comprehensive testing before we consider it suitable to be
included in our portfolio.
A closely controlled design and manufacturing process
plus in-house Research and Development is all managed
by a proficient engineering team that sets us apart from the
competition. They ensure our products are, and remain, at a
consistently high standard.
It is our quality of process that distinguishes
us from the competition.
Reliable, consistent products and controlled
development and production procedures have
enabled us to reach OEM standards, winning
us business across the globe.
We are so confident
in our products, we
provide two, three
and in the case of
some products,
lifetime warranties.

Brigade is committed to making roads and worksites safer
for all. From our humble beginnings in the UK, we now have a
network of overseas subsidiaries, joint venture companies and
partnerships with over 80 approved international distributors,
all chosen for their high level of service and expertise in
vehicle safety.
Whether you operate an international, multi-vehicle fleet or a
small business in a remote corner of the globe, Brigade has a
local specialist to help with your safety requirements.
We can provide a solution for a specific problem or offer
friendly advice and support if you are new to vehicle safety
systems.
Wherever you are in the world, large road-going vehicles
