Demography is the statistical study of human populations, especially with reference to size, density, distribution, and vital statistics (relating to births, deaths, marriages, health and disease, etc). In making population projections for different countries, demographers look at the profile of the countries’ residents. They ask: What are the ages of the people? How many are men? How many are women? Using this information, they construct “population pyramids” (a.k.a. age histograms) like the ones the class will use in this activity. These graphs illustrate the configuration of a country’s population as shaped by 70 to 80 years of economic, political and natural events.

In Canada, key sources are Statistics Canada, which conducts the Census of Canada and publishes data through CANSIM. In the United States, major sources are the U.S. Census Bureau, which conducts the decennial Census and American Community Survey, and FedStats, which provides access to statistics from U.S. federal agencies. Internationally, important databases are the OECD iLibrary, containing economic and social indicators, and the World Bank Data, which includes over 2,000 indicators for most nations worldwide.

- 3. Geohive displays statistics on population and economic production. Population figures are arranged in several ways. You could look alphabetically by country, or in a variety of subcategories. The statistics about each nation are from that nation’s official statistics agency, or the U.N.
- 4. Geohive can answer questions about: The current populations of nations Population trends over time Population projections Population as arranged by age Population figures regarding the urban/rural divide.
- 5. Agricultural production by crop type or nation. The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of nations.
- 6. Geohive is only available online. The main page features: Several graphs showing world population grouped by age Population projections Recent updates to the site Tabs at the top of the page to more information Browsing is required; there is no search option.
- 7. The tabs hold the majority of the site’s data: Global data Country data Resources Home
