Lipstick has a long history dating back 5000 years to Mesopotamia, though ancient Egyptians also used natural dyes for lip color. Through the 16th century, ingredients included plant and insect sources like beetles, ants, henna, and fish scales as well as beeswax. Modern lipstick formulations emerged in the 20th century including the addition of lip liner in WW2 and semi-permanent liquid lipstick in the 1990s.
