The Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation is famous for its dinosaur fossils. It is characterized by multicolored mudstones and white, tan, and gray sandstones. It can reach up to 450 m thick, but is typically around 100 m thick. It covers an area of over 1,000,000 square kilometers. The Lower Cretaceous formation is very thin, around 30 m thick on average but up to 220 m thick. It has a widespread distribution across several central U.S. states covering over 815,000 square kilometers. It contains a variety of fossil types as it was a mixed marine and land environment.
