This document discusses a staff training program called TQL Learning 2.0 that was implemented at the Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County. The program introduced staff to new web technologies over 23 weeks, with a focus on topics like blogging, photos, RSS feeds, tagging, wikis, and podcasts. Staff were encouraged to explore these tools on their own and complete self-discovery exercises. The goal was to engage and motivate staff, encourage play and experimentation with new technologies, and empower individuals to take responsibility for their own learning. Over 90 staff participated, with many completing all or most of the exercises. Staff reported that the program helped eliminate fears about new tools and expand their knowledge. The document raises

1) The document discusses Nikola Tesla's discovery of the rotating magnetic field, which allows production of rotary force without commutators.
2) It explains that arranging coils connected to alternating electromagnetic forces (EMFs) out of phase by 90 degrees produces a traveling magnetic pole that rotates and causes the field magnet to rotate as well.
3) This rotating magnetic field principle underlies all periodic electric waves and enabled many later inventions beyond just electric motors.

An electromagnet is a coil of wire that produces a magnetic field when electric current passes through it. The magnetic field can be strengthened by using an iron core inside the coil or by increasing the amount of current or number of coils. Electromagnets are common components in electronic devices and generators produce electricity by moving a coil of wire within a magnetic field, with the electric current strength affected by the speed of coil movement and number of coils.
The document describes the development of an online self-assessment tool for faculty to evaluate their readiness for online teaching. A team from three universities collaborated to create the rubric. They identified core competencies and grouped them into categories. The rubric was developed over several iterations that included field testing and collecting feedback. The goal of the tool is to help faculty determine what skills they need to develop and link them to appropriate resources.

This document summarizes a project to set up computer labs at two sites - Second Chance Shelter in East St. Louis and Restoration Urban Ministries in Champaign-Urbana. Both sites provide transitional housing and services for families. The project team set up computer labs with 6 computers each running Linux or Edubuntu. The document discusses the N.O.D.E. project at the University of Western Australia which aimed to create an online community for students to share their university experiences. It provides details on student and staff surveys conducted to inform the project as well as pilot projects that were done or in progress. The biggest challenges for a project like this would be developing and maintaining the technology platform, finding support, and generating engaging content.
The document outlines a plan for real world implementation of a laptop initiative in an unnamed country. It discusses goals of developing an improved educational system to enable full participation in the 21st century. It notes considerations around building a core team and gaining local partnerships. The plan discusses distributing laptops on a large scale focused on areas of greatest need. It also outlines providing necessary infrastructure, ongoing technical and pedagogical support, and assessing the impact on multiple dimensions.
This document discusses the formation of Open Educational Resource (OER) user groups in Washington state to promote collaboration around OER adoption and implementation among K-12 educators. It provides several examples of proposed user groups that would bring together teachers from different districts to review, adapt, and share OER materials in areas like mathematics, English language arts, social studies and for small, rural schools. The goals are to define best practices, champion OER distribution and implementation, and address challenges like developing shared resources and aligning district-created materials with open licensing.
K-12 educators using OER rarely have the chance to connect with others outside of their district to discuss OER. This session will explore an attempt to create regional communities of OER practitioners.
School districts across Washington state are beginning to use OER as part of their instructional material strategies. In order to help school districts address shared implementation considerations, the Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) is facilitating the development of OER User Groups focused on a particular open curriculum or content area.
User groups are a way for district curriculum, technology, and administration leaders across the state to convene both online and in person to address issues such as:
* maintaining fidelity of implementation with highly adaptable resources
* addressing equity of access with various OER distribution platforms
* understanding how OER fit into instructional materials approval and adoption pathways and how they encourage a paradigm shift from the traditional adoption cycle
* meeting professional development needs
* sharing teacher created materials to support implementation and understanding open licensing for those materials
* measuring the efficacy of an open curriculum and sharing those findings with other districts
OSPI, in partnership with Washington state educational service districts, assembled a statewide task force to create a vision and collaboratively design and develop the structure and management of the first OER User's Group, focused on the EngageNY mathematics instructional materials. Additional OER User Groups will address other content areas. These support systems will allow for rich cross-district discussion about the nuts and bolts of using OER as core instructional material in the classroom.
The K-12 Literacy Committee meeting covered several topics:
1) The need to develop a K-12 Literacy Plan aligned with the Race to the Top grant requirements including a literacy structure, continued professional development, and Common Core implementation.
2) A review of the district's success in meeting academic growth targets and increasing proficiency rates.
3) The professional development plan to train teachers in key comprehension and vocabulary routines to improve literacy.

The Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) is an international survey that measures adults' proficiency in key information-processing skills - literacy, numeracy, and problem solving in technology-rich environments. It is coordinated by the OECD and involved over 20 countries in its first round. PIAAC provides data on adults' skills and how they relate to social and economic outcomes. It assesses skills through background questionnaires and measures of literacy, numeracy, problem solving, and other domains. Results are reported by the OECD and participating countries to further understanding of adult skills and inform policy.
The document discusses the deployment of an online survey called INSIGHTS through the Learning Community Management System (LCMS) to understand student preferences for online learning at HCCB. INSIGHTS collected data on student demographics, content consumption, and growth trends from August 27, 2012. The dynamic, real-time results showed that 376 students in the Caraga region were reached and showed interest in online learning through the LCMS. No further actions were taken based on the survey results as of the date presented.

The King School Library Biennial Report summarizes the activities of the King School Library from August 2010 to May 2012 under the direction of Library Media Specialist Natalie Sapkarov. During this period, the library collection decreased in size due to weeding but circulation increased by 3,000 materials. Special events were held and grants totaling $9,705 were received to support new materials and technology, including student response systems. The library curriculum focused on instilling a love of reading and information literacy skills for students in grades K-5.
The document describes the Bluestem Award program for students in 4th and 5th grade at King School. To participate, students can check out one award nominee book per week and must finish the entire book, with one renewal allowed. After finishing each book, students fill out a form to be entered into a monthly raffle. Reading 4 nominees in a row or 6 total earns extra raffle entries or an invitation to a pizza party. The student who reads the most nominees wins a special prize. Votes from the pizza party will be sent to the state to contribute to deciding the overall award winner.
This document appears to be a reading response form for a student. It asks the student to provide the title of the book they read, rate how much they liked it, and then answer one question by circling their choice. The questions ask about the problem and solution, most interesting part, or their favorite character. The form collects the student's name and teacher as well.

The document summarizes a study on the information needs of English children. [1] The study interviewed 188 students across different age groups to understand what information the children themselves felt they needed. [2] It identified 13 categories of information needs, which varied between primary, middle, and high school students. [3] The findings suggest children have unique information needs compared to adults, and libraries and schools should recognize and accommodate these needs to better support children.
