Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born in 1882 in New York to an upper middle-class family and graduated from Harvard and Columbia Law School. He married Eleanor Roosevelt in 1905 and had a career in politics including as Assistant Secretary of the Navy. Roosevelt served as governor of New York during the Great Depression and tested relief programs. He was elected the 32nd US President in 1933 and launched the New Deal to boost the economy through federal work programs. Roosevelt led the US through World War II and worked closely with Allied leaders until his death in 1945, leaving Harry Truman to see the country to victory.
