The document summarizes Penny Robinson's journey to becoming an Assistant Lecturer while living with Asperger's syndrome. It describes the I CAN Network, which provides mentoring and support for those on the autism spectrum. The network aims to shift the focus from deficits to strengths using four pillars: mentoring, educating teachers, advocacy, and developing talents. Penny discusses how she didn't know anyone else with autism growing up but found support through the network. She credits her family and the network for helping her achieve independence and her career.

• 81% of people on the spectrum have NO post-school qualification

7. My perspective
When I was diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome 18 years ago, I didn’t
know anyone else on the spectrum, but I knew I was “different”.
Almost 5 years after my diagnosis, I found out that someone I knew at
uni also had Aspergers. I started jumping up and down in the campus
centre at lunchtime! I was so excited to finally know someone else.
The I CAN Network will allows to have what I didn’t have – know they
are not alone during their schooling years.
