Answering our call
Jesus travels through Samaria despite Jews normally avoiding it. He encounters a Samaritan woman at a well and asks her for water, surprising her since Jews and Samaritans do not interact. Jesus tells her he can offer living water that will never leave her thirsty again. Later, his disciples are puzzled to find him speaking to the woman, but Jesus explains his true food is doing God's will, not physical sustenance.
A tale of two encounters
The document describes two encounters between Elijah and Elisha. In the first encounter, Elijah calls on God to prove his power and turn the people back to him, while Elisha asks to inherit Elijah's spirit. In the second encounter, Elijah is taken up to heaven in a whirlwind while Elisha strikes the water with Elijah's cloak and crosses over, showing he has inherited Elijah's spirit and mantle as a prophet. The encounters show that while Elijah and Elisha had the same call, their focuses and responses to God's calling differed.
Our focus our destiny
Jesus sends his disciples away in their boat while he prays alone. During the night, the disciples encounter a strong storm while far from land. Jesus walks toward them on the water, calming their fear. Peter steps out in faith but sinks when doubting; Jesus rescues him. Upon returning to the boat, the disciples worship Jesus, acknowledging him as the Son of God.
Right perspective
The psalmist almost lost faith seeing the wicked prosper while remaining pure seemed pointless. However, in God's sanctuary he gained perspective: while the wicked seem at ease, God puts them on a slippery path to destruction. Maintaining purity is not in vain though trouble comes, as the righteous find security in God despite outward appearances.
The price for increase
This document summarizes a passage from Luke 11:5-10 about prayer and persistence. It teaches that through keeping on asking, seeking, and knocking, one will receive what they ask for from God. The passage tells a story about going to a friend's house late at night to borrow bread when an unexpected guest arrives. Though initially refused, the friend will get up and give what is needed if the person keeps knocking persistently. The document applies this lesson by saying increase requires struggles, hindrances, and pain but comes through persistence in prayer.
Children of light
The document summarizes a passage from Luke 16:1-9 about a dishonest manager who reduces debts owed to his rich employer so that people will welcome him when he loses his job. The manager uses his position to benefit others before he is fired in order to gain friends. The summary concludes that Christians should make use of opportunities, shine their light in all directions, and focus on using worldly resources to benefit others and make eternal friends.
Time for more
Jesus enters Jericho and encounters Zacchaeus, the chief tax collector, who climbs a tree to see him. Jesus calls out to Zacchaeus and goes to his home as a guest. Though criticized, Zacchaeus promises to give half his wealth to the poor and repay any cheating fourfold. Jesus declares salvation has come to Zacchaeus' home, for he shows himself a true son of Abraham through his generosity.
Keep going
Jesus prays in Gethsemane, asking God to remove "this cup" of suffering from him, but submitting to God's will. He finds his disciples sleeping three times when he asks them to keep watch and pray. Jesus tells them their spirit is willing but their flesh is weak. He says the hour has come for the Son of Man to be betrayed and tells the disciples to rise and go, as his betrayer approaches.
Increase and shine
This document discusses Jesus' teachings from Matthew 5:13-16 about being the salt of the earth and light of the world. It says believers are blessed to be a blessing to others, and that obedience to God must precede fulfilling one's purpose. The full mission of Jesus, and by extension all believers, is to glorify God the Father through one's deeds so that others come to know Him.
Sowing for the impossible
Genesis 26:1-14 describes Isaac living in Gerar during a famine. God tells Isaac not to go to Egypt but to stay in Gerar, where He will bless Isaac and give the land to his descendants. Though Isaac fears for his life due to his beautiful wife Rebekah, King Abimelech recognizes her as Isaac's wife. Isaac prospers greatly in Gerar, harvesting 100 times what he planted due to God's blessing.
Moving forward
The passage describes the Israelites continuing their journey to the Promised Land, led by Moses and aided by an angel. It emphasizes the central role of the Tent of Meeting, where Moses could speak with God face to face and the people could make requests. Moses pleads with God to personally go with them, reminding God that His presence is what sets the Israelites apart and gives them rest. God reassures Moses that He will go with them.
Grateful ending
The angel Gabriel appeared to Mary and told her she would conceive and give birth to a son named Jesus, who would be the Son of God. Mary was troubled by this message since she was a virgin. Gabriel explained that she would conceive through the Holy Spirit. Though afraid of the unknown, Mary humbly submitted herself to God's will, saying "I am the Lord's servant."
What have we learnt
God tests Abraham's faith by commanding him to sacrifice his son Isaac. Abraham obeys God and prepares to sacrifice Isaac, trusting that God will provide. As Abraham and Isaac walk to the sacrifice site, Isaac questions where the animal sacrifice is. Abraham responds with faith that God will provide.
For this cause
The document discusses Paul's mission to persuade others about Christ based on his understanding of his responsibility before God. It describes how Christ's love controls Paul to share the message that through Christ, all people can be made new and live for him rather than themselves. The call to worship
God tests Abraham's faith by commanding him to sacrifice his son Isaac. Abraham obediently takes Isaac and supplies for a burnt offering and travels to the mountain God designated. Along the way, Isaac questions Abraham about the missing animal for the sacrifice, to which Abraham replies that God will provide.
