The Mediator pattern promotes loose coupling by defining an object that encapsulates interactions between other objects. It defines an intermediary object that decouples classes that might otherwise be tightly coupled. The Mediator pattern allows for many-to-many relationships between interacting peers to be promoted to full object status. A mediator design example shows how a mediator class can be used to send messages between worker objects without tight coupling.
This document provides information about introductions, greetings, nationality, the alphabet, and basic questions and answers in English. The document summarizes key aspects of marathon running including:
1) The marathon is a long-distance foot race of 42.195 kilometers that is usually run as a road race.
2) Elite marathon runners will do weekly mileages of over 100 miles and include long runs of 20 miles, while "normal" runners aim for a longest weekly run of about 20 miles.
3) In the week before the marathon, runners "carbo-load" by increasing carbohydrate intake to allow their bodies to store more glycogen, which is burned for energy during the race.
This document provides an overview of the Perl programming language. It discusses scalars, arrays, hashes, references, subroutines, packages, warnings, strictness, password encryption, file handling, command line arguments, and process management in Perl. Specific topics covered include using @ and $ prefixes for arrays and scalars, accessing elements of arrays and hashes, defining and calling subroutines, using crypt() for password hashing, opening/writing/reading files, and using fork() to create child processes. Examples of code are provided to demonstrate many of these Perl concepts.
Message Queues : A Primer - International PHP Conference Fall 2012Mike Willbanks
Mike Willbanks gave a presentation on message queues. He defined message queues as software components used for interprocess or inter-thread communication. He discussed common message queue protocols like AMQP, STOMP, and XMPP. He also covered different message queue software like RabbitMQ, ActiveMQ, and Beanstalkd. Finally, he provided best practices for using message queues, such as choosing standards-based protocols, considering delivery and message policies, and using tools like Supervisord for process monitoring.
This document outlines the growth and development of an organization from its start with one viral video and 10 million in funding to today where it has 122 days to public beta, 4 infrastructure staff, and is hiring for 4 more open positions. It also discusses moving to an enterprise model with automated infrastructure and data-driven provisioning requiring a minimal infrastructure team. Constraints mentioned include business models, legacy thinking, audiences, and technology.

This presentation discusses the collaborative assessment process used by Passaic County Community College's Writing Initiative. The assessment incorporates input from students, instructors, tutors, the writing center, and institutional research to evaluate student writing at different points. Instructors provide assignments and grades using tools like LibGuides. Tutors and the writing center provide feedback through the online tutoring system. Students contribute writing samples and reflections through eFolios. Institutional research analyzes test scores and surveys. Initial results found improved student writing and high satisfaction with support services.
