The presentation I gave at the State Library of Queensland event "Libraries in a Google world". Other presenters included @carolgauld, @libsmatter, @jemimaeve, @franciskneebone. We were asked to talk about the role of libraries in a Google world. The briefing we were given for the panel included this statement: "Libraries need to reassert themselves as providers of balanced and significant information." My presentation unpacked this statement and challenged it. Because I don't believe that's the role of libraries in a Google world. I think the role of libraries in a Google world is to empower people.

How digital first design enables and enriches learning
This document discusses digital first design in learning. Impostor syndrome is common in academic settings due to factors like casualization of employment, competition for funding and jobs, and mixed messages about expectations. Davis shares her own experiences with impostor syndrome as a woman and social scientist, and provides advice for coping with it individually through self-care and finding support, and for supporting others in academia.

New mothers' information experience in social media: a grounded theory study ...
These are the slides from my PhD final seminar presentation, which took place on Monday 15 December 2014.
I undertook a constructivist grounded theory study that investigated new mothers' engagement with information in social media spaces. The primary data collection strategy was multiple sequential semi structured interviews. This was supplemented by social media observation to inform the second interview with each participant.

I am grateful to my participants for sharing their time and experiences with me. It has been a pleasure to watch their children grow up over the course of the study and a privilege to be allowed insight into their lives during a period of immense change and transition.
Thanks also to my supervisors, who put up with my stubborn independence and sporadic work on the PhD, and supported me through a crazy completion timeline that I'm sure none of us thought I'd make. And I certainly wouldn't have without them.
Setting the scene
Kate Davis is the coordinator of information education at Queensland University of Technology. Visualisation: VALA 2014 L Plate session

From collection to content
I prepared these slides for a short speech at the internal launch of State Library of Queensland's Content Strategy, which replaces their Collection Development Policy. I didn't use the slides in the end, but spoke to this outline.
I spoke about two things: trends in the practice of collecting, and the nature of information, specifically how it has changed since 'Web 1.0'.
Notes to accompany slide nine:
Web 2.0 and social media in particular have fundamentally changed the nature of information: how it is created, how it flows, how it is sourced, how it is used, and how it is interpreted.
The ‘participative, multimodal, flat and ever-changing features of Web 2.0 services’ (Špiranec & Zorica, 2010, p. 151) are fundamentally different to the features of Web 1.0 and have undoubtedly had a profound impact on the nature of information experience.

These are the slides for a workshop I ran at the inaugural Australian Information Education Symposium on 24 June 2012 at UniSA, Adelaide.
The social classroom
This is a presentation I gave for a visiting delegation of Chinese academics. It's about how we incorporate social technologies in our teaching. The slides are pretty bare-bones, as having an interpreter meant I couldn't talk at my usual fifty miles a minute... so less content than normal.
It was really fun talking about using social media in teaching with this audience - given the restrictions on access to social media in China.

Imagine an IoT processing system that is already quite mature and production-ready and for which client coverage is growing and scaling and performance aspects are life and death questions. The system has Redis, MongoDB, and stream processing based on ksqldb. In this talk, firstly, we will analyze scaling approaches and then select the proper ones for our system.
Mutation Testing for Task-Oriented Chatbots
Conversational agents, or chatbots, are increasingly used to access all sorts of services using natural language. While open-domain chatbots - like ChatGPT - can converse on any topic, task-oriented chatbots - the focus of this paper - are designed for specific tasks, like booking a flight, obtaining customer support, or setting an appointment. Like any other software, task-oriented chatbots need to be properly tested, usually by defining and executing test scenarios (i.e., sequences of user-chatbot interactions). However, there is currently a lack of methods to quantify the completeness and strength of such test scenarios, which can lead to low-quality tests, and hence to buggy chatbots.
To fill this gap, we propose adapting mutation testing (MuT) for task-oriented chatbots. To this end, we introduce a set of mutation operators that emulate faults in chatbot designs, an architecture that enables MuT on chatbots built using heterogeneous technologies, and a practical realisation as an Eclipse plugin. Moreover, we evaluate the applicability, effectiveness and efficiency of our approach on open-source chatbots, with promising results.
From Natural Language to Structured Solr Queries using LLMs
This talk draws on experimentation to enable AI applications with Solr. One important use case is to use AI for better accessibility and discoverability of the data: while User eXperience techniques, lexical search improvements, and data harmonization can take organizations to a good level of accessibility, a structural (or “cognitive” gap) remains between the data user needs and the data producer constraints.
That is where AI – and most importantly, Natural Language Processing and Large Language Model techniques – could make a difference. This natural language, conversational engine could facilitate access and usage of the data leveraging the semantics of any data source.
The objective of the presentation is to propose a technical approach and a way forward to achieve this goal.
The key concept is to enable users to express their search queries in natural language, which the LLM then enriches, interprets, and translates into structured queries based on the Solr index’s metadata.
This approach leverages the LLM’s ability to understand the nuances of natural language and the structure of documents within Apache Solr.
The LLM acts as an intermediary agent, offering a transparent experience to users automatically and potentially uncovering relevant documents that conventional search methods might overlook. The presentation will include the results of this experimental work, lessons learned, best practices, and the scope of future work that should improve the approach and make it production-ready.
