- The following presentation outlines the strategic plan that Team A has created for the Statewide California Electronic Library Consortium, otherwise known as SCELC.
- SCELC is an electronic resources, or e-resources, consortium that helps private academic libraries and other private institutions negotiate contracts with vendors, such as ProQuest or Lexis Nexis. In other words, the organization can help one of their members, like Pepperdine, receive an electronic scholarly database for a significantly lower rate than the institution would otherwise pay. For its ability to negotiate various contracts for various institutions, SCELC charges a fee that covers administrative costs, workshops, and scholarships for its members.
- SCELC’s mission is to bring together nonprofit academic and research institutions to promote the effective use and dissemination of electronic information to libraries and their users. SCELC seeks to enhance the effectiveness of member institutions and works to better position these organizations for achieving their missions. A list of the ways in which SCELC specifically fulfills its mission is listed on this slide.
- According to SCELC employees, all of the goals from the organization’s most recent strategic plan have been met, and so SCELC is currently without a strategic plan. During an interview with SCELC staff, a few individuals voiced concerns over the fact that the organization is moving forward without a set path. However this lack of direction, has nothing to do with a shortage of opportunities, of which there are several available to SCELC. These opportunities, or goals, rather will be explored in the following slides.
