The Laboratory for Global Health Observation (LGHO) at the University of Alabama - Birmingham opened in September 2007 under the direction of Sarah Parcak. It was the result of partnerships between 7 schools and departments at UAB and received infrastructure support from 2007-2010. The LGHO saw a decline in students from 19 in Fall 2009 to none in Fall 2010, which coincided with budget problems at UAB. In Spring 2010, 10 students conducted research projects using remote sensing data and techniques related to public health and environmental issues around the world.

With advances in remote-sensing technology and higher-quality products, the field of spectral indices has experienced a sizeable progressive evolution. These spectral indices computed by using different brands of remote-sensing products and applying additive, subtractive, or normalizing operations, have been and are being devised to detect diverse objects in various spheres of our planet. For instance, there are spectral indices that detect and delineate plant leaf moisture, that biome comes under biosphere, at distinctive spatial scales. There are other indices that are used to extract elements from the lithosphere like iron oxide content, or to show clay mineral content, etc. Similarly, there are spectral indices to detect various elements which constitute other spheres of our planet. In this work, we have used the Web of Science (WoS) database from 1999 to 2022 and searched for only English language research journals, book chapters, books, and scientific reports. We found 2227 documents in all the categories to perform a systematic, scientometric review regarding spectral indices used for the identification of elements constituting various objects of the five different spheres. The primary objective of this chapter is to present a systematic and scientometric review of spectral indices used for quantification of different elements of all the spheres of our planet relating to lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, biosphere, and anthroposphere, across remote-sensing platforms and sensors. The study also examines the rationale of spectral indices across the ever-advancing remote-sensing platform and sensors, and their future challenges, and investigates the challenges and prospects of this domain of study. This study will be useful for acquainting new researchers with the use spectral indices for their specific objectives.

An 87-channel microscope system was used to measure the scattering spectra of various bacteria at different angles and wavelengths. A simpler 15-channel system then demonstrated the viability of bacterial identification, accurately identifying four out of six bacterial species in tests of individual bacteria. This technique could provide a simple way to identify bacteria without the need for specialized equipment or skills.

Biosketch Dan
Dr. Daniel Campbell is a principal research scientist with over 30 years of experience in organic chemistry, materials science, and sensor design. He received his PhD in organic chemistry from Georgia Tech in 1982. Currently, he is the chief science officer at Lumense, Inc, where he leads research in developing integrated optic sensors for chemical and biological detection. Previously, he held positions at Georgia Tech where he conducted research in areas such as organic synthesis, polymers, and sensor fabrication. He holds several patents related to chemical sensor design and has authored over 50 publications and conference presentations in the field of chemical sensors.
GRIN Endoscopy
This document characterizes long gradient index (GRIN) lens endoscope systems for multiphoton imaging of unstained tissues. There exist diverse services that researchers can use to stay in constant contact with colleagues, to keep up with scientific results, or to manage productive teams. Among them are commercial services, e.g., LinkedIn or Facebook as well as sites that were specifically designed for scholars, e.g., Academia.edu, ResearchGate, or VIVO.
A number of so called National Researcher Networking (NRN) sites expose high quality institutional data via web sites and/or semantically structured RDF data. Among them are Elsevier’s SciVal Experts, Harvard’s Catalyst Profiles, and the NIH funded VIVO system. Thanks to these systems, scholars are uniquely identified via their institutional IDs and are linked to the papers they published, the patents they authored, the funding they received, and the courses they teach.

This document describes a technique called multispectral angular-resolved dark-field imaging (MARDI) that can automatically identify individual bacteria based on their unique light scattering spectra. An 87-channel microscope system was used to measure the scattering spectra of various bacteria at different angles and wavelengths. A simpler 15-channel system then demonstrated the viability of bacterial identification, accurately identifying four out of six bacterial species in tests of individual bacteria. This technique could provide a simple way to identify bacteria without the need for specialized equipment or skills.

This document summarizes the findings of a group of researchers who met to discuss common misunderstandings about the causes of land-use and land-cover change. It aims to move beyond simplistic explanations and instead present a more nuanced understanding based on case study evidence. The researchers concluded that population growth and poverty alone do not drive tropical deforestation as often believed. Rather, deforestation is influenced by changing economic opportunities which are mediated by institutional and policy factors. Rangelands are also not simply natural systems but are maintained through interactions between human and environmental factors. Land use changes are complex processes influenced by local conditions as well as national and global forces.

Biosketch Dan
Dr. Daniel Campbell is a principal research scientist with over 30 years of experience in organic chemistry, materials science, and sensor design. He received his PhD in organic chemistry from Georgia Tech in 1982. Currently, he is the chief science officer at Lumense, Inc, where he leads research in developing integrated optic sensors for chemical and biological detection. Previously, he held positions at Georgia Tech where he conducted research in areas such as organic synthesis, polymers, and sensor fabrication. He holds several patents related to chemical sensor design and has authored over 50 publications and conference presentations in the field of chemical sensors.
GRIN Endoscopy
This document characterizes long gradient index (GRIN) lens endoscope systems for multiphoton imaging of unstained tissues. The authors fabricate a portable, rigid endoscope system using a 1 mm diameter GRIN lens system that is 8 cm in length, capable of imaging a 200 μm field of view at 4 frames/s with 0.85 μm lateral and 7.4 μm axial resolution in water. In vivo images of unstained tissues in live, anesthetized rats are presented using this portable device, showing promise for clinical use of GRIN endoscopy.

GeneLab Final Submitted Abstract
This document proposes an expansion of the GeneLab resource to better collect, analyze, and share spaceflight experimental data. The expansion involves: 1) Adopting a model similar to the Department of Energy's KBase platform to integrate data management, analysis tools, and results sharing for space biology research. 2) Designing a robust graphical user interface to engage the scientific community in accessing, searching, analyzing, and comparing spaceflight data through intuitive tutorials and publication/analysis suggestions. The goal is to maximize the impact of spaceflight experiments by bringing together scattered omics data in a redesigned, quality-controlled platform and increasing data/analysis reuse.
