The document recommends steps like prioritizing public transportation quality and accessibility and addressing public attitudes to create a more sustainable transportation system.
Technical Paper on Chennai Metro Project (Mr Klaus Muenz and Nandan Kumar)Nandan Shandilya
The document discusses the construction challenges faced during the construction of the Chennai Metro rail project. Some key challenges discussed include:
- Tunnelling through varied and unpredictable soil and ground conditions including mixed soil, weathered rock, and fresh rock. This led to variations in cutter consumption and frequency of interventions.
- Tunnelling in a dense urban environment with constraints at the surface like buildings, monuments, railway tracks etc. Precise tunnelling control was required.
- Breaking into and out of underground metro stations posed challenges due to confinement and ensuring structural integrity of station areas. Specialized tunnelling techniques like drag-through mining were used.
- Ground control challenges due to presence
Breach of Contract Against Employer : A Case Study & BAILMENT OF A CONTRACTkhushbu chauhan
Mrs. Bryne brought a claim against her former employer for breach of contract and sex discrimination. She had been dismissed two months before going on maternity leave. She argued she was paid less than male directors and was dismissed after raising concerns about unequal pay. The tribunal found her dismissal constituted unfair dismissal due to insufficient notice. However, her sex discrimination claim failed. The tribunal ruled discriminatory comments made by her boss were "just humor" and not reflective of company policy. She was awarded damages for breach of contract.
Skybus metro is a proposed rail system with elevated tracks and suspended coaches that aims to provide improved public transportation. It would help address increasing traffic issues plaguing cities due to population growth and improper planning. Some key advantages are that it takes up little space, is rail-based allowing for mass transit capacity, does not divide cities, and is not prone to derailment, capsizing, or vandalism while being noise and pollution free. The proposed skybus system uses elevated concrete tracks supported by columns to run standard railway coaches and bogies below. This allows carrying more passengers using less structural weight compared to traditional trains. Capital costs for skybus metro are also much lower at 45-50 crores per km compared to 230
"Introduction to the High Speed Rail" is a PowerPoint for primary and secondary students that provides an overview of the High Speed Rail and its development in the United States. It also highlights related careers in the HSR field. Additionally, this lesson can be paired with a "High Speed Rail Track Design" activity.
The document provides an analysis of the cement sector in India for the year 2010-11. It discusses the history and development of the cement industry in India since 1889. It then profiles 5 major cement companies in India - ACC Cement, India Cement, Binani Cement, Shree Cement, and Ambuja Cement. The document also outlines the research methodology used for the analysis, including the objectives, benefits, sources of data, research design, reference period and limitations. It further provides an economic analysis of India and a comparison of average ratios for the 5 companies, ranking them.
The document discusses the Mumbai Metro Rail Project. It provides an overview of Mumbai's transport infrastructure challenges and outlines the need for an efficient mass transit system like the metro. The metro project is proposed to be implemented in 3 phases connecting various parts of the city. Phase 1 details are discussed including project planning, financial structuring, bidding process and execution challenges that led to delays. Key risks are also identified and allocated to mitigate issues in construction and operations.
The French TGV high-speed rail network includes over 900 miles of dedicated high-speed lines operated by more than 500 train sets, carrying over 1.4 billion passengers since 1981 without a single casualty. The key goals of the TGV projects were to significantly reduce rail journey times between major cities like Paris, Lyon, and Bordeaux, serving over 250 stations and carrying around 100 million passengers annually. Total costs for developing the TGV network were nearly $35 billion, with later projects receiving increasing public subsidies up to 76% of costs. The TGV has succeeded in winning significant market share from air travel on routes under 3 hours by halving some journey times.

Suburban Train Station as Community Hub: Proposal for Carseldine Stationlinda carroli
I've been working on this study of a local train station in support of Transit Oriented Development. In it, I propose that community infrastructure (e.g. community spaces and offices for non-profit organisations) and design for sustainability should be provided at train stations. If more parking is required then those structures can and should also accommodate community uses.
I have also posted this to Live Local as my first experiment. Live Local is an online social networking place to share stories and ideas about improving your community. I will be blogging about this venture for Placed.

This document discusses the importance of transport and communication for development. It describes a scenario where a village man needs to take his sick wife to the hospital, but faces difficulties due to lack of transport and communication facilities. It then outlines the objectives of examining different modes of transport and communication and their role in connecting people and facilitating socio-economic growth. The key modes of transport discussed are roadways, railways, water transport and air transport. It focuses on the classification and importance of roads and railways for transportation within India.
Child labor is a significant problem in Bangladesh. Over 93% of child laborers work in the informal sector in small factories, workshops, streets, and homes. Poverty is the main driver, as families rely on children's income. This takes away from children's education and health, leading to injuries, illness, and stunted growth. Both the government and NGOs work to address this issue through education, vocational training, health services, legal protections, and advocacy. Everyone can help by donating, raising awareness, and supporting strong enforcement of child labor laws.
The cement industry in India is the second largest producer of cement globally. It has seen significant growth with a CAGR of 9.7% between 2006-2013. The key drivers of demand are the housing sector at 64% and infrastructure such as roads and bridges at 17%. The largest cement companies are ACC, Ambuja, and Ultratech. Issues facing the industry include high transportation costs and dependence on coal and power which have rising costs and are regulated by the government. The industry has impacts on the environment through carbon dioxide emissions in production and nitrogen oxide emissions from fuel combustion.
The document summarizes key issues and challenges facing Indian ports. It notes that India relies heavily on seaborne trade, has a long coastline, and parallel port management systems under central and state control. Major ports fall under central control while many non-major ports are state-controlled. Cargo traffic at major ports grew at 7.3% annually from 2000-2011 compared to 13.7% growth at non-major ports. Indian ports have low drafts limiting access for large vessels. The document compares Indian port productivity and costs to international benchmarks, finding that Indian ports lag global best practices. It outlines the economic characteristics of port infrastructure and rationale for tariff regulation by an independent authority.
The document provides information about Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL), the largest natural gas transmission and distribution company in Pakistan. It details SNGPL's network infrastructure including pipelines, compressor stations, and customers served. It also summarizes the company's vision, core values, shareholding structure, certifications, human resources, and completed pipeline projects extending its network since 1964.
The document presents information on sky bus technology, which is proposed as an improved transportation system to address traffic issues in cities. Sky bus would move people and cargo along existing roads at 100 kmph, without requiring additional road space, at a lower cost than underground metro systems. It consists of standard railway coaches running on an elevated track system of skyways, sky bogies, sky coaches, and sky stations. While a prototype sky bus system was tested in India, it had an accident in 2004 and has not been further adopted. The technology aims to provide a safer, more affordable, and pollution-free transportation option for urban areas struggling with traffic.
The document discusses child labor, defining it as work that harms or exploits children under the age of 18. An estimated 250 million children currently work in illegal, hazardous, or exploitative conditions. Many child laborers work in agriculture or manufacturing jobs that endanger their health, safety, and development. Ordinary people can help address this issue by learning about it, supporting awareness organizations, and providing direct assistance to affected children. Proposed solutions include increasing family income through other means, expanding education access, strengthening social services, and empowering families to control their fertility.
