A couple promises premises.
One step back before starting our journey.

So, what is the Event Loop?
And what are the main parts composing it.
The Event Loop is rather a concept than an actual thing.
Implementations in different runtimes can vary, yet the main parts are usually
consistent.
Memory Heap - An unstructured region of memory.
Call Stack - A structure containing an ordered list of stuff to be executed.
Queue - A structure which contains operations to be executed later.

Main concepts of the Event Loop.
Three things worth mentioning.
A. Run-to-completion operations
B. Leveraging queues to free up the thread.
C. The timeout isn’t granted.
This results in the possibility of having a Non-Blocking I/O even when
leveraging a single thread.

We aim to dispel the notion that large PHP applications tend to be sluggish, resource-intensive and slow compared to what the likes of Python, Erlang or even Node can do. The issue is not with optimising PHP internals - it's the lack of proper introspection tools and getting them into our every day workflow that counts! In this workshop we will talk about our struggles with whipping PHP Applications into shape, as well as work together on some of the more interesting examples of CPU or IO drain.

Much has changed since then and to make the Raspberry Pi run Scratch as well as possible we have ported the code forward to a 4.5 image so it can run on a StackVM; and soon a Cog VM. A substantial amount of Smalltalk code has had to be rewritten to do this and yet we have to maintain complete compatibility with the original system to avoid overloading the teachers that use it in their classes. A new branch of Cog for the ARM cpu is being written as well. Bio: Tim Rowledge has almost 30 years of Smalltalk experience, and almost as much with ARM. Somehow the two have always gone together.
