Level 1: Position
• Position is lowest level of leadership.
• Everything is wrong with using position to get people to follow you.
• Rely on rules, regulations, policies and organization charts to control
their people.
• People will only follow within stated boundaries of their authority.
• People do only what is required of them.
• Usually have difficulty working with volunteers, younger people, and
the highly educated.

Level 1: Position/Rights
 know your job description thoroughly.
 Be aware of the history of the organization.
 Relate the organization’s history to the people

 Do your job with consistent excellence.
 Do more than expected.
 Offer creative ideas for change and
improvement.

Level 2: Permission
• Based entirely on relationships
• People follow because they want to
• When you like people and treat them like individuals,
you begin to develop influence with them. You develop
trust.
• You can like people without leading them, but you
cannot lead people well without liking them.

Level 2: Permission / Relationships
 Possess a genuine love for people.
 Make those who work with you more successful.
 See through other people’s eyes.
 Love people more than procedures.
 Do “win-win” or don’t do it.
 Include others in your journey.
 Deal wisely with difficult people.

Level 3: Production
• Level 3 = Results
• Leaders gain influence and credibility and people begin
to follow them because of what they have done for the
organization.
• Results of hitting level 3: work gets done, morale
improves, profits go up, turnover goes down, and goals
are achieved and momentum kicks in.

• Leading others becomes fun.
• “When you are winning nothing hurts” Joe Namath.
• Leaders can become change agents at this level.
• Tackle tough problems and face thorny issues.
• Make difficult decisions that will make a difference.
• Take people to the next level of effectiveness.

Level 3: Production/Results
 Initiate and accept responsibility for growth.
 Develop and follow a statement of purpose.
 Make your job description and energy an integral part
 Develop accountability for results, beginning with

Level 4: People Development

• High investment in people deepens relationships, helps
people know one another better and strengthens loyalty.
• Performance increases at this level
• You now have more leaders on team
• These leaders help improve everybody’s performance

Level 4: People Development/Reproduction
Realize that people are your most valuable asset.
Place a priority on developing people.
Be a model for others to follow.
Pour your leadership efforts into the top 20 percent of
your people.
Expose key leaders to growth opportunities.
Be able to attract other winners/producers to the

common goal your leadership.

Level 5: Pinnacle
• Only naturally gifted leaders ever make it to this
level.
• Develop other leaders to become level 4 leaders.
• Developing followers to lead on their own is difficult.
• Most leaders don’t do it because it takes so much
more work than simply leading followers.
• Developing leaders to the point where they are able
and willing to develop other leaders is the most
difficult task of all.

Level 5: Personhood/Respect
Your followers are loyal and sacrificial.
You have spent years mentoring and molding
leaders.
You have become a statesman/consultant, and are
Your greatest joy comes from watching others grow
and
You transcend the organization.

Climbing the Steps of Leadership
The higher you go, the longer it takes.
The higher you go, the higher level of commitment.
The higher you go, the easier it is to lead.
The higher you go, the greater the growth.
You never leave the base-level, or the levels below
where you are.
As a leader, you won’t be on the same level with all of
your people.
You must work to carry other leaders with you up the
steps.

Develop confidence in your people skills.
See every relationship you have as a chance to
develop that person.
Walk slowly through the crowds.
Consistently keep a list of potential leaders you can
invest in.
