It is my pleasure to provide this letter of recommendation in support of Tom Chih as he seeks
employment with your organization. As a Research Leader at Battelle Memorial Institute, I was
responsible for direct supervision of the interns assigned to our Colonial Place Office. Tom’s role
as a Health and Analytics Intern for nearly a year coincides with his pursuit of a master’s degree
in Applied Economics. During that period, I found him to be youthful, energetic, and friendly, as
well as a charismatic. He writes and communicates well. Tom is a capable young professional,
who will excel in the presence of strong mentorship and fair leadership.
Tom has demonstrated a strong knowledge of economics and statistics. In his first assignment
as econometric support for a high visibility project for the Army Public Health Center, he
completed his tasks on time, asked good question, and provided an excellent deliverable to me.
His part of this project entailed collecting survey responses from participants, completing an
environmental scan, and conducting a quantitative data analysis. In addition to doing as
assigned, he also gave useful feedback on tools, providing strong insight and displaying an
effective knowledge of advances math and statistics.
In a later assignment, I asked Tom to conduct anenvironmental scan and comparative analysis
of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) demonstration model series. His
capacity for understanding and deploying mid-level program evaluation methodology in context
of healthcare economics showed a level of skill beyond my expectations. Tom’s study design
assessed whether–and if so to what extent–the CMMI demonstrations addressed the quadruple
aim of reduced costs, increased quality, improved public health, and an improved clinician
experience of care. He completed an internal report that will inform our capture of future CMMI
contracts. He also presented his findings at the Battelle Interns’ Conference, where he exhibited
strong presentation skills. He was sharp, articulate and well-versed on the subject matter.
Over the past several months, I have found Tom to be a willing team member who is always
ready to help and give his best. All new members of the professional workforce need guidance
and support, but Tom takes such inputs well, asks insightful questions, and tries to ensure that
he understands what is expected from him.
