What is a case study?
A case study is a snapshot story of how you helped your customers. It tells
the reader three things:
1. The specific problem the customer had
2. Your approach to solving their problem
3. The end result
Why bother?
Case studies are powerful tools. They are one of the best ways to tell the
world about what you can offer.
When they are done well they tell a story, giving real-life examples that tell
people exactly how you solved the problems of your customers or clients.
They can highlight your success and generate some great publicity. They are
so much more interesting than statistics. You are making it personal,
detailing the journey you go on with your clients to achieve better
results for them.
How we do it.
When we write a case study we start by trying to understand why you need
one. Whether it is it to share with the press, to send to a funding body or
potential client, or to include in your annual report, it helps us ask the right
questions.
We will ask you for contact details for a client whose story you’d like us to
tell. We draft a framework of questions to ask them over the phone and then
work to capture their story, using their own words as much as possible, and
write it up as a single page case study.
How we helped a client
We worked with a Home-Start charity to draft two case studies to highlight
their work. Home-Start offer trained volunteer home visits to help parents of
young children who are struggling.
The charity wanted us to tell the story of one of their clients and one of the
volunteers who work with them to deliver their service.
We spoke to both the volunteer and the family over the phone and told their
stories in the following two case studies that Home-Start will be sharing
with a funding body as part of an evaluation process.
The case studies
The two case studies included:
• Direct quotes to tell the story
• A summary of the issues faced by volunteers and families
• Details of how Home-Start worked with them to solve these problems
• Pictures to illustrate the work they did
• The end result and outcomes achieved
• Guaranteed anonymity for the family by changing any names
