There may be parts of your life where your dreams and ‘you deserve’ feels trapped as a rose flower trapped beneath heaps of garbage. There might have been moments when you heart was broken into so many pieces, you have not been able to find even one piece yet. You might feel your life is like a radar less ship with a storm lurking silently yet ominously in the horizons. So many times you might have thought of giving up. I understand. I completely understand. Yet I appeal to you….just write this once….”You deserve”. And let magic happen.

Dearest Darling Friends,
The first rains lashed the grills of the balcony of our house. Behind the safety of the glass
partitions, I was shielded indoors. The curtains were withdrawn. Nature looked alluring. The rains
mocked me as I looked on. Hug me, feel me, it said. I was uncertain. The chill of the warm drops that
escaped inside the hall from between the doors, touched me.
It felt exciting.
From the road, I could hear the shrill delighted gleeful
laughter of a few teen girls as they scrambled towards
inadequate shelters.
I told myself, come on naren, you deserve the glory of the first
rains. I gently moved towards the glass doors, parted them,
and enough drops of water touched me all over as if shouting
together, “Holi Hai”.
I laughed. I looked upwards towards the skies. The dark
clouds had never before, so convincingly, uplifted my mood,
as much as today. I whispered to myself, ‘wow’.
At this point, I had no cares of the world. I was completely in
the moment. I felt one with everything around. I felt there is no
“I”, only “we”. I felt immersed with nature. I felt so excited. I was happy.
I said to myself again, ‘you deserve this glory of the first rains’.
Well, well, well, all good things in life come to and end.
A few delightful minutes later, having dried myself, to the amused look of my mother-in-law, I was sipping a cup
of warm ginger tea. I truly believe, she was rethinking about her wisdom on getting her beautiful daughter
married to this 45 year old baldie who was so happy in getting soaked in rains !!! Yet…
“You deserve….”, these words continued to linger.
Not having any other work in my hands, I indulged myself with a question. ‘Naren, if you were to make a list of
things that people would say you deserve, what would you want on that list?’

You deserve flowers on your doorstep everytime you open the doors
and a warm glass of milk in the morning.
You deserve post-it notes left on the dashboard of your car and a few in your mail box too.
You deserve a tender coconut ice cream at 3 am followed by hot masala chai with bun maska. Yummy…..(I
am feeling hungry now).
You deserve honest and sincere people every day
You deserve to be hugged every hour
You deserve to be reminded every now and then, how wonderfully wonderful you are
You deserve a time when you love somebody and words are not necessary to express it, your heart beats
will be enough.
You deserve a time when nothing in the world can hold the width of your smile.
You deserve a time when you can write poetry.
You deserve the depths of silence
You deserve the highest bunjee jump in the world record and the wildest wild water rafting too and the
coolest sky diving too. Ufffff, kya baat hai!
Ahaaaaaaa
My list held many more points. Enough of me. What about you? When you write a prose poem like this, with
the title of ‘You Deserve’, what amazing points will be there?
Just smile, relax, lean back and ‘imagine’. Imagine yourself in the most peaceful place in the world. Imagine
yourself, surrounded by rain. And imagine yourself writing your piece on ‘You Deserve…’
What will stop you? Here are a few possibilities. In the past, in your life, there might have been chaos. There
may be parts of your life where your dreams and ‘you deserve’ feels trapped as a rose flower trapped beneath

Don’t hold yourself. Don’t just write logically. Flirt with the impossible, flow with innocence, drop all judgements
and just imagine….
