CONTENT STANDARD The learner demonstrates understanding on how
Anglo-American Literature and other text types serve
as means of preserving unchanging values in a
changing world; also how to use the features of full-
length play, tense consistency, modal, active and
passive constructions plus direct and indirect speech
on enable him/her competently performs in a full-
length play.

play through applying effective verbal and non verbal
strategies and ICT resources based on following
criteria: Focus, Voice, Delivery, and dramatic
conventions.

I. Objectives : At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:
a. Identify sentences in active and passive voice;
b. Determine context when to use active voice and passive voice; and,
c. Construct sentences using active and passive voice.

Sentence Scramble!
The teacher will divide the class into 5 groups and give each group an envelope
or bag with one set of word strips. Instruct the groups to work together to
arrange the strips into a correct sentence. Once the groups have arranged their
sentences, ask a representative from each group to read their sentence aloud.
Sentences Scramble:
The sun rises in the east.
A bird built a nest on the tree.
The students played soccer at the park.
She found a beautiful shell on the beach.
The artist painted a vibrant picture.
1.3 Motivation
Carry out an action!
Stand in front of your class. Drop a pen on the floor. Ask your students to tell
you what has just happened and ask them to begin the sentence with your
name. Someone should be able to say: “Ms. Rodriguez dropped a pen on the
floor.” Write this sentence on the board. Ask students to identify the subject
and the verb in this sentence; they should say the subject is “Ms. Rodriguez”
and that the verb is “dropped”.
Repeat the action - Introduce the passive voice
Drop your pen on the floor one more time. Tell your students that you’ll tell
them what has just happened, but this time your sentence will begin with, “The
pen…” Go to the board and write, “The pen was dropped on the floor.” Ask your
students to identify the subject; they should say it is the “pen”. Ask them to
identify the verb; they should say it is “was dropped”.
A. Analysis
The teacher will ask the following questions to the students:
1. What are the subjects and verbs in each sentence?
2. What differences do you notice in the structure and focus of the two
sentences?
3. How can identifying the subject and verb help you understand the
construction of a sentence?
1. Abstraction
Voice - is the quality of verb that shows whether the subject is the doer or
receiver of the action.
Type of Voice of the Verb;
Active voice- is used to indicate that the subject of the sentence is the doer of
the action.
Example: The boy kicked the ball.

In this sentence, the subject is The boy who does the action kicked since the
subject is the doer of the action and the verb kicked has a direct object, we
can say that the verb is in the active.
More examples :
A student wrote the winning essay.
Alexander Graham Bell invented the.
The Chef prepared a delicious meal.
Passive Voice - the subjects becomes the receiver instead of being the doer of
the action.
 the subject of the sentence receives the action.
Example: The ball was kicked by the boy.

A delicious meal was prepared by the chef.
2. Application
Sentence Switcheroo!
The teacher will divide the class into 10 groups. Give each group a set of
sentence cards. Instruct each group to take turns picking a card and reading
the sentence aloud. The group must then rewrite the sentence in the opposite
voice (active to passive or passive to active).
Active Voice Passive Voice
The teacher praised the student. The student was praised by the
teacher.
The scientist discovered a new
element.
A new element was discovered by the
scientist.
The gardener planted beautiful

III. Evaluation
Direction: Write A if the sentence is in the active voice and P if it is in the passive
voice.

each one in active voice. Write your answer on a half sheet (1/2) of paper
(crosswise).
